Today my air conditioner went out. It will be repaired in a couple of days so it could be worse. However, it reminded me that even though I’ve lived in Georgia for over 40 years, I have never gotten used to the heat and humidity during our summer months.

As leaders, I know there are things we should never be expected to get used to as well. Things that create a holy discontent.  Things that keep me awake at night:

  1. I never get used to leaders who serve themselves rather than others.
  2. I never get used to people sitting on the sidelines of our churches and society and not volunteering.
  3. I never get used to the exploitation of children.
  4. I never get used to seeing people society has seemed to have forgotten like the homeless.
  5. I never get used to politicians of any party who clearly have an agenda other than serving their constituents.
  6. I never get used to hearing grown men tell me they are unemployed.
  7. I never get used to people who are rude to waiters and waitresses (especially on Sundays).
  8. I never get used to meeting abandoned children.
  9. I never get used to leaders who knowingly lead people astray.
  10. I never get used to those times when my wife and I are in a disagreement.
  11. I never get used to conflict.
  12. I never get used to my daughter crying for any reason.
  13. I never get used to people leaving their spouses.
  14. I never get used to failure.
  15. I never get used to feeling like I’m not good enough.
  16. I never get used to things breaking down.
  17. I never get used to greed.
  18. I never get used to the large number of children who need government assistance to simply eat a school lunch.
  19. I never get used to children growing up without a father in the home.
  20. I never get used to a church’s vision going unfunded and unfulfilled.
  21. I never get used to churches having a declining attendance.
  22. I never get used to families who stop going to church.
  23. I never get used to young people who stop going to church when they go off to college.
  24. I never get used to moral failures by religious leaders.
  25. I never get used to lay leaders at churches shutting down the plans of pastors.
  26. I never get used to illiteracy.
  27. I never get used to churches having generational gaps.
  28. I never get used to aging parents who are sick.
  29. I never get used to leaders who squash the spirit and dreams of others.
  30. I never get used to people entering into a Christ-less eternity.

This is my very transparent list.  You may not have a problem with some of what I’ve listed.  If so, feel free to talk about it.  But as you are discussing it, also tell me what you never get used to.
