Halloween is coming up this weekend!  Since we are in the trick or treat season, I thought we would have some fun and take a look at leadership skills (actually the lack thereof) of three fictional characters associated with this time of year.

  • Michael Myers of Halloween
  • Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th
  • Freddy Krueger of Nightmare on Elm Street

If you want to improve as a leader, let’s take a look at these three and do the exact OPPOSITE!  The following are some of leadership skills they do not possess:

  1. People Skills – The three listed do not enjoy the company of others…and others do not enjoy being around them either.
  2. Team Building – Each person prefers to work alone limiting their overall effectiveness.
  3. Conflict Resolution – When issues arise on your team, there are more productive ways of moving forward that exhibited by these individuals.  They show little interest in discussing issues and finding common ground.
  4. Parental Influence – Each came from a dysfunctional background.
  5. Oratory Skills – I have yet to hear any of the individuals mentioned cast a vision that was compelling, motivating, and worth following.
  6. Sustainability – Each focuses solely on short-term results while wilfully neglecting the development of an effective long-range plan of success.
  7. Continual Learning – I’ve never seen any of them open a book, ask probing questions or advance their education.
  8. Sacrifice – Giving up something for the good of others is not their default mode.
  9. Generosity – They are selfish and only concerned with their own interests.
  10. Motivational Skills – Rather than creating environments where people feel better about themselves and making them think they can accomplish more than they ever dreamed possible, they would prefer to kill them.  That’s bad leadership.

Well, I hope you had some fun with this.  As a leader, you want to develop the intuition to process every experience through a leadership grid, even Halloween.

Remember to not eat too much candy and watch out for the kids.
