Thanks again to The Rocket Company for allowing me to attend the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit for the next two days.  In an effort to help fulfill our mission of helping churches succeed, I will be bringing some of the top leadership lessons from the incredible faculty the WCA has assembled.

Liz Wiseman started the afternoon session.  The following are leadership quotes and lessons from her session.  You can get her new book Multipliers by clicking here.

  1. There is more intelligence in our organizations than we can see with our naked eyes and that we are putting to use.
  2. When you lead like a multiplier people around you get smarter and more capable.
  3. Win or lose, demand people play their best.
  4. He (KR Sidhar) creates an environment with tons of pressure but no stress.
  5. Pressure is about control as a leader.
  6. What did a diminisher do?  How much of your intelligence was this person using?
  7. Who was your multiplier, the person in which you did your best work?  How much of your intelligence did this person get?
  8. The Multipliers believe people are smart and they are going to figure it ou.
  9. The Diminishers believe they can’t figure out without their help.
  10. Diminishers hire smart people but don’t utilize them fully…They are tyrants.  They create stress.
  11. When you get stressed you get physiologically stupid.
  12. Diminishers make good decisions but then have to spend time getting buy-in for decisions they’ve already made.
  13. Multipliers are talent magnets.  They identify genius and help people put it to use.
  14. Multipliers are liberators.  They create space…They are challengers.  They ask for hard things.
  15. They create owners, not hirelings in their organization.
  16. Working for multipliers is exhausting but exhilarating.
  17. We do our greatest damage when we hold our most noble intentions.
  18. We often don’t create followers when we set the pace.  We create spectators.
  19. Are you leading like the genius who has the answers?  Or are you leading like the genius maker?
  20. At the top the Genius Hierarchy is the genius maker, not the genius.

Chris Brown – Senior Pastor or North Coast Church in Vista, CA.

  1. Spiritual leadership will always be different than secular leadership.
  2. At this point (in Saul’s leadership), any neck is better than yours.
  3. Saul does what any good leaders does – “I hired him!”
  4. Saul could not celebrate the achievements of others over the success of his.
  5. How did this get to be about Saul?  The same as it does with pastors who think it’s their church.
  6. Sometimes in losing our coat we find our character.
  7. The constant struggle about leadership – is it all about me?
  8. There’s nothing wrong with desire but we have to keep in mind whose Kingdom this is.
  9. Never get caught up in the great things of leadership if it takes you away for the God-things of leadership.
  10. Leaders don’t have to lead the nest.  You’re kicking them out.
  11. Spiritual leadership.  You serve your staff.  You make them better.
  12. Insecure leaders have to have title and position.  But good leaders like Jesus pick a towel and wash feet.
  13. Are you asking me to give away my position, my title, and platform?  NO.  But Jesus is.
  14. We’re going to have call sin sin.  The bible talks a lot about pride and ego and none of its good.
  15. We’ve got four senior pastors.  You say, “That’s great.”  Not if you’re one of them.
  16. We don’t care who teaches the message as long as the message is being taught.
  17. Outserve your team.  Make them better…This is not for every leader.  Just those that want to be great.
  18. We’ve got personality driven organizations.  We’re worried about succession.  Your board are worried about whose going to fill this auditorium.
  19. In the future we’re going to have some great civic centers that used to be churches because the personality left.
  20. Our calling has to trump our culture.
  21. Why are young leaders leaving?  Because we’re there (in the way).  They know it and I know it.
  22. Instead of succession, can we do it as a team?
  23. How can I be the best Jesus I can be?  Do you room in your chariot for a David or Joseph?
  24. Do I expand His Kingdom or my reputation?  Because you may be forced to choose.
  25. What difference is the Holy Spirit making in the way I’m currently leading?
