Thanks to The Rocket Company, I am attending the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit for the next two days.  In an effort to help fulfill our mission of helping churches succeed, I will be bringing some of the top leadership lessons from the incredible faculty the WCA has assembled.

Patrick Lencioni is a Summit regular and one of my favorite speakers.  He spoke on how to lose your best people.  The following are leadership quotes and lessons from his session.  You can get his new book The Advantage by clicking here

  • When you’re a leader you’re a CRO, Chief Reminding Officer.
  • It’s not about getting a good job or bad job.  It’s about getting a fulfilling job or being miserable.
  • The first sign of a miserable job is anonymity.  They didn’t know us or care about getting to know us.
  • “Just carry my bags.  You’re my monkey.”  We were a commodity.
  • Many professional athletes are miserable.
  • Good people don’t leave jobs where they’re known.
  • When we don’t stop to take the time to get to know people, we’re taking money out of our pocket and throwing it into the fire.
  • We are called to love the people who work for us.
  • If you’re anonymous, minister upward to your boss.
  • Irrelevance is a job killer.  If you don’t think your job makes life better for others you can’t love your work.
  • I think Adolph Hitler was born and raised in an airport.
  • Who are the happiest celebrities?  The ones with interests in other things.
  • We don’t want to admit that administrative assistants’ jobs is to make our lives better.
  • When someone’s job is to help us, we have to celebrate that when it happens.
  • We have to remind people constantly their job matters.
  • All human beings have a need to assess from themselves that they’re doing a good job.
  • The desire to put something in place to know you’re doing a good job.
  • When we give someone the ability to measure their own performance we lose our power.
  • Money is a satisfier.  They need enough to make them happy.  Measure drivers.
  • I can’t imagine how we can be a Christ-like leader without knowing the people that work for us and show them how they serve others.
  • Management is a ministry.
