Leadership begins at home.

The above advertisement from Toyota tells the amazing story of Stef Purdy and his daughter Amy.  Forced to lose her kidneys and legs below the knees, Amy’s life has been an inspiration to thousands.  This video reminds of the power of the human spirit and a loving family.

As I watched the Purdy family’s story and listened to their comments, I gleaned 8 Practices Of Highly Successful Fathers:

  1. Highly Successful Fathers Build Great Relationships With Their Children – Amy said, “I have a great relationship with my dad.  He’s been not just a father.  He’s been a dad.”
  2. Highly Successful Fathers Are Present During Their Children’s Greatest Challenges – Stef recounted, “The doctors had only given her a 2% chance of surviving.  I was the one who had to tell her in order to save her life that they needed to take her kidneys and her legs below her knees.”
  3. Highly Successful Fathers Will Sacrifice Anything For Their Children – Stef did what I think practically every father would reading this post would do.  Amy said, “He brought me into this world and then he kept me here when he gave me one of his kidneys the week of my 21st birthday.”
  4. Highly Successful Fathers Provide Safety And Security For Their Children – Great fathers give their children a sense things are under control and they will be O.K.  He said, “I didn’t want her to see the fear in me.”
  5. Highly Successful Fathers Bring Great Joy To Their Children – “That night when she stood up and we danced, I kind of knew everything was going to be O.K.”
  6. Highly Successful Fathers Inspire Their Children To Accomplish Things They Never Thought Possible – Because of the inspiration her father gave her, Amy’s life is now an inspiration to countless others.  As she says, “Inspiration is contagious.”
  7. Highly Successful Fathers Give Their Children Second Chances – Failure is never final to great fathers.  Amy proudly noted, “It was him.  He gave me life twice.”
  8. Highly Successful Fathers Give Their Children A Chance At A Quality Life – Amy concludes by saying, “That’s why I’m going to live it.”

Great Relationships, Present During Life’s Greatest Challenges, Will Sacrifice Anything, Provide Safety and Security, Bring Great Joy, Inspiration, Second Chances and a Quality Life.

These are the things highly successful fathers bring and do.  It sounds a lot like the Jesus, doesn’t it.
