Every family has its axioms.  Every family has statements which define them.  Every family has mantras.  In our home, one of our axioms is “On Sunday the Dodd family goes to church.”

It is not up for debate.  If you are tired and need rest, manage your time well and rest on Saturday.  On Sunday the Dodd family goes to church.  Except for today.

I was unable to go to church though my wife and daughter did.  Therefore, I watched Life.Church last evening (more on that later this week) and North Point Community Church online this morning.

North Point is currently in a message series entitled “See The World”.  Their goal is for people to see the world as God sees the world.  This morning, Andy Stanley preached a message on money and possessions.  He asks those watching and in attendance, “Is how you see your money and possessions the same as how God sees your money and possessions?”

During the month of June, I am focusing on Apex Leaders, those who are at the top of their professions.  Make sure you read each post in this collection.  As a preacher and communicator, no one is better than Andy.  He is an Apex Preacher and Communicator.

The following are 42 Quotes And Lessons From Andy Stanley On Money And Possessions from Luke 16:1-14.  I have added additional leadership statements in bold prior to his quotes.

  1. The Songs Pointed To The Central Message Truths Of Eternity And That God Can Be Trusted – The songs included Good Good Father and How Great Is Our God.
  2. The Baptism Pointed To The Central Message Truths Of Eternity And That God Can Be Trusted – The songs were followed by an incredible video and subsequent baptism of Patrick.  Upon hearing the message of the Gospel, he said, “I hope God can be trusted.”  Patrick quit his job that week so he could spend more time with his family and live a life pleasing to God.  He now tells everyone with great assurance that God truly can be trusted in every area of your life.
  3. Andy Lays The Foundation Of Message With A Fundamental Truth – He quoted Stephen Covey by saying, “We see the world not as it is but as the way we are.”
  4. Andy Acknowledges Non-Christians Are In The Room – “Here’s what you should know if you’re thinking of becoming a Christian.”
  5. Andy Makes Points Memorable By Using Repetition – “When we see as God sees we are more inclined to do as God says.”
  6. Andy Makes Points Memorable By Using Contrast – “We all start with ‘Do as I say.’  But when you get past childhood, it needs to be ‘Do as I see.'”
  7. God Wants You To See Money As Possessions Just Like He Does – “Your Heavenly Father wants you to see the world as He sees it…Jesus actually came into this world to help people see the world as God sees it.”
  8. Andy Continually Pointed To Jesus – “You cannot get any closer to God than Jesus.”
  9. Andy Invites People Into The Text By Asking A Question About Their Immediate And Distant Future – “What can I do now to prepare for my future?”
  10. Andy Makes Points Memorable By Using Repetition – As Andy read through Luke 16, he noted on two different occasions the poor manager would hear, “Thank you so much.  Let me know if there is ever anything I can do for you.”
  11. Good Money Managers Effectively Use Time And Opportunity – “He had time and opportunity and used it wisely.”
  12. Andy Continually Built Tension – As he read the passage he kept noting how the Pharisees and crowd were “leaning in”, “shocked”, “on the edge of their seats” and even told those watching to “pay attention”.
  13. You Engage People With Questions, Not Just Answers – “Do you want to know what God thinks about how I should use my money?”
  14. Andy Addressed The Elephant In The Room And Removed Barriers To People Listening To Him – “If you’re online, aren’t you glad you’re not here because you think I’m going to take up an offering.  I’m not going to do that.”
  15. There Are Eternal Consequences To How You Use Your Money – “When it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”
  16. Money And Possessions Are Tools – “Everything you own is a tool that you have the potential to use, that when you go to eternity there will be people there who will welcome you there.”
  17. Money And Possessions Are About People, Not Things – “Many say, ‘What do we have to show for it.’  The better questions is ‘Who are you going to have to show for it?'”
  18. Money Cannot Get You Into Heaven – “The reason people give is not for people to be forgiven of their sin.”
  19. Everything We Have Is A Tool – “This principle reminds me of you (North Point)…there is a way to take temporal things and use them to have an eternal impact…Everything we (Andy and Sandra) have, house, kitchen, basement, cars, it’s all a tool.”
  20. “What do you have and how can you use it?”
  21. Some Things You Own Need To Be Redeployed.  They Have No Eternal Value – “What do you have that can’t be used?  What do you have that needs to be redeployed?”
  22. There Are TRUE Riches – “If you have used what you have for the reason it has been given to you, Who will trust you with TRUE riches?”
  23. Money And Possessions Are A Test – “God sees money and possessions not only as a tool, but also as a test.”
  24. God Is Watching What You Do With Your Money And Possessions – “Everybody has a little.  Our Heavenly Father is watching what you are doing with your little before He gives me much.”
  25. Andy Uses Humor To Disarm Non-Christians – Humor is disarming and attractive.  I loved when Andy winsomely told people “Don’t cross your arms.  I just believe the One who raised from the dead.” as he was discussing this topic.
  26. God Actually Owns Your Money And Possessions – “How we manage what we assume is ours is actually a test of your devotion to the One who it actually belongs.”

  29. Let’s Be Honest, Some People Are Motivated By Cause And Effect – “Those who are motivated by cause and effect, your Father in Heaven is paying attention and you will be rewarded.”
  30. Your generosity matters and it matters beyond this life.”
  31. Your Money And Stuff Is The Chief Competitor For Your Heart – “Jesus taught the chief competitor for your heart and your devotion is your stuff and your money.”
  32. Money And Possessions Are A Trademark – “God sees our use of money as a trademark.  What you do with what you have signifies whose you are.  It is a sign of ownership.  You can’t serve God and money.”
  33. You Can’t Fool God.  He Knows Your Heart. – “You talk yourself out of being generous.  You’re not fooling the One who matters the most.  God knows your heart.”
  34. “Generosity is not a financial issue.”
  35. Generosity Is A Heart Issue – “Rich people are not generous.  People with a lot are not generous.  Generous people are generous.  It is a heart issue.”
  36. We Try To Justify Our Lack Of Generosity – “Whether you have a little, middle, or a lot, we can justify our lack of generosity. God knows your heart.”
  37. Andy Makes Points Memorable By Using Alliteration – “You have a little bit of time and a little bit of resources.  Your Heavenly Father is watching.  How are you going to use this tool.  This is a test.  It is a trademark.”
  38. We Are Here Because Of The Generosity Of Others – “The reason there is a church is a generation came before you and someone knew their money was a tool and it was a test.”
  39. When Thinking About Money And Possessions, Think With The End In Mind – “You’re not going to get to the end of your life and wish you would have gave less and consumed more.”
  40. You Will Run Out Of Time Before You Run Out Of Money – “90% of you, maybe 100%, this is true.  You’re going to run out of time before you run out of money.”
  41. You Will Never Miss What You Give Away – “Figure out a way to use it all.”
  42. Andy Mades His Final Point Memorable By Using Repetition – “It’s all a tool.  It’s all a test.  It’s all a trademark.”
