Today’s next speaker was Reggie Joiner.  Reggie is the founder and CEO of Orange, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to influence those who influence the next generation. Orange provides resources and training for churches and organizations that create environments for parents, kids and teenagers.  The following are 36 leadership quotes on the importance of second mile living and parties I captured from his incredible session:

  1. When we look for the best in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we are doing what God does all the time. So in loving and appreciating our neighbor we are participating in something sacred. – Mister Rogers
  2. Jesus defined what is sacred and we need to measure what we do.
  3. As leaders, we need to be reminded of what the compass is.
  4. It’s so easy to get busy doing the work of ministry to lose sight of what really matters.
  5. I don’t drink. I don’t know why I feel like I have to apologize for not drinking to you guys.
  6. When you show up on their turf, in their life, and engage in their stuff, the questions change…The relationship goes to a different place.
  7. Sometimes it takes a party to change how we see each other.
  8. A party is any effort to celebrate, serve or enjoy each other in ways that adds value to life.
  9. Christianity is more like a party than a class.
  10. We need to invite a generation to have a different kind of experience than what we are doing.
  11. When I read Scripture, Jesus loved a party.
  12. Jesus told stories about parties.
  13. Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a party.
  14. Sometimes it takes a party to tell people that God loves people who go to parties.
  15. Fun is one of the best ways to authenticate the life of a teenager.
  16. You can’t have fun with someone you haven’t forgiven.
  17. A party proves people matter more than our opinions.
  18. Fight for relationships in spite of the different ways we see opinions.
  19. Sometimes it takes a party to remind us everyone is invited to the party.
  20. Everyone who is brown, everyone who is white, everyone who is black is invited to the party.
  21. Even the republicans, even the democrats are invited to the party. This one concept should change how we do ministry.
  22. The church should lead the way in saying, “Everyone is invited to the party.” The Gospel integrates us, not segregates us.
  23. Too many churches have a history of marginalizing those who don’t look like us.
  24. We are better at debating the Gospel than demonstrating the Gospel.
  25. It starts with us.
  26. It takes effort to celebrate, serve, or enjoy each other in ways that adds value to life.
  27. Do something you don’t have to do.
  28. Mile one fulfilled an obligation. Mile two changed the nature of their relationship.
  29. When we do ministry as usual, we fulfill an obligation. That’s mile one.
  30. Something changes in your ministry changes when you step over into the second mile.
  31. The world changes because of one step.
  32. What have you done lately you didn’t have to do? What have you done lately you weren’t obligated to do?
  33. I care about things I didn’t care about 10 years ago.
  34. Where you invest your treasure, your heart follows.
  35. With this generation, get them to do something they haven’t done before to get a burden. You do something and then get a burden.  You have to ask them to do something.
  36. We are called to invite a generation to walk a second mile and be invited to a party.

Here are two comments from Carlos Whitaker:

  1. You have to look past a neighbor’s situation and look into their story.
  2. There is the potential in this room to raise an entire generation of Good Samaritans.
