Excellence Wins: A No-Nonsense Guide To Becoming The Best In A World Of Compromise, written by Horst Schulze is an absolute masterpiece!  For those who may not be familiar with Mr. Schulze, he is the cofounder of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.  His book is incredibly helpful, extremely practical, challenging, and easy-to-read, very John Maxwellian in that since.

I am going to make a couple of strong statements.  Excellence Wins is simply the best business leadership book I have read in quite awhile.  Mr. Schulze addresses the following and much more:

  • Mission and vision statements
  • Hiring practices
  • Training and development
  • Raising the standard of excellence
  • Best customer service practices
  • And much, much more…

I would also add this is one of the top four books I have read on the subject of establishing a culture of excellence.

Schulze gives you the blueprint of why Ritz-Carlton is synonymous with excellence, class, and rarely-matched customer service.  He gives his background story and how his famous phrase, “We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen” was developed.

Finally, his Epilogue entitled The Rest Of The Story is greatest closing section of a leadership book I have read.  In fact, I would advise you to read these pages first.

The following are 5 Things Leadership Is From Horst Schulze’s book Excellence Wins:

  1. Leadership Is Understanding The Vision – A leader must clearly see and understand the company’s vision.  They must also understand what is expected of you and your employees.
  2. Leadership Is Completely Committing To The Vision And Clearly Communicating It – Leaders must make a conscious decision they are going to achieve the vision and then clearly communicate this level of commitment to their employees.
  3. Leadership Is Executing The Plan To Achieve The Vision – Leaders must get started and take actionable steps towards seeing the vision become reality.  All actions must align with the vision or your goal will not be reached.
  4. Leadership Is Maintaining Focus On The Vision – Do not take your eyes off the ball!  NO EXCUSES or rationalizations as to why the vision is not being achieved.
  5. Leadership is Energizing Employees To Fulfill The Vision – This must be done daily.  A leader must be persistent and relentless in their drive towards excellence.  Leadership is ensuring employees are taking action and moving towards the fulfillment of the vision.

These lessons come from just two pages from this incredible book.  I cannot recommend Excellence Wins enough.  You should order multiple copies for you and your leadership team HERE.  Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
