Young leaders are always looking to make a difference, to make a mark in the world. They want to be respected and heard by their peers and the previous generation. So what is the best way for young leaders to gain influence with older people – Do Your Job!
Derrick Rose, point guard for the Chicago Bulls, is the odds-on favorite to win the NBA MVP this year. In addition to being a great player, the 22-year-old has become the undisputed leader of the team.
The naturally unassuming, shy Rose recieved some great advice this past summer from Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard on what is needed to become a leader on a team filled with veterans.
Howard says, “The best way to be a leader for your team as a young player is by example…Once you show them you can lead by example, then you can start to be more vocal. But you have to earn that right, that respect.” Â
Young leaders, you probably have more energy and passion than the older members of your team. You probably talk a great game, but do you produce? That is what gets respect from veterans.
Do a great job. Produce. Earn the right to be heard. And remember, influence will then flow out of your production.
