Leaders love quotes. Quotes simply capture what we are thinking and feelings and puts into words. The following are some of my favorite quotes from the last month.
- “Stupid loses more games than smart wins.” – ESPN’s Bob Knight
- “I need to put on my glasses so I can talk to God.” – My wife right before a morning prayer time. We still laugh about this.
- “If you’re leaving a guy in Triple A because of service issues (to save money), I don’t think you holding up your end of the bargain with your players and your manager.” – Atlanta Braves GM Frank Wren
- “We’re close (to the Steelers). They make the extra play. That’s what championship teams do. We’re not there yet.” – Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti
- “Certainly we didn’t play, didn’t coach, didn’t general manage and didn’t own up to our expectations. We read our press clippings.” – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
- “We can be maybe the most talented and best football team. But sometimes the most talented team doesn’t win. We have to make sure we’re the best football team, that everybody is doing their role, doing what they’re supposed to be doing at the level they’re supposed to be doing it.” – Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy
- Blaine Gabbert is “a leader who was not afraid or anybody or anything. The ship’s captain – he’s going to take control.” – Aldon Smith
- “And then there’s the best part: his mentality, his drive, his focus. Nobody wants this more than Blaine.” – personal quarterback coach Skip Stitzell
- “They’re legends because of their success, but it is refreshing to be able to see how two different approaches can be used to get results.” – Derek Fisher on Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan
- “We did some things that really got us some short-term success, but it really backfired on us and set us back.” – Atlanta Thrashers owner Bruce Levenson on trading talented prospects for veterans.
- “When Bob Gibson played, he pitched up in the zone. Don Drysdale pitched up. No one questioned those guys fly ball ratio. The only number that matters is the score.” – Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza
- “The chemistry is a lot better this season, a maturation that has come with experience.” – Florida Gators point guard Erving Walker
- “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.” – Gen. George Patton
- “I had a chemistry teacher who used to cover the chalkboard with all these complicated formulas. The one day she came in and wiped it clean. It was so refreshing to see that bright green chalkboard with nothing on it. That’s exactly how I felt (after trading Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups).” – Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl
- “In basketball, stars have a bigger impact than any other sport. Teams don’t win without them.” – Billy Beane
- “Most of us know our limitations. I think Bubba (Watson) feels like he doesn’t have any.” – Bill Haas
