Today at Fellowship Bible Church, my pastor Crawford Loritts gave perhaps the greatest message on generosity I’ve ever heard. Often we embelish or are prone to hyperbole, but that statement is not an exaggeration.
As a leader it challenged and spoke to me deeply. I want to pass along his statements to you.
- Hoarders have a disease. They can’t shed stuff. They have a fear of loss.
- Don’t hold on to your children too tightly.  Kids are either going to break your heart or the other extreme is you can’t get rid of them.
- The grace of generosity is the gospel.
- Generosity leaks and evaporates.
- Generosity is the habit of giving freely without expecting anything in return.
- If you can’t give up what you have, you’re not free.
- Inconvenience is a sign we’re moving towards generosity.
- God has called us to be distributors, not collectors.
- Generosity isn’t forced.
There Are 3 Biblical Motivators For Generosity
1. We are under a New Owner
- God owns the world. – Psalm 24:1
- God owns the wealth. – Psalm 50:10
- God owns our ability. – Deuteronomy 8:17-18
- God owns us. – I Corinthians 6:20
2. We Have A New Heart
- Â Is anything worth holding onto in light of the cross?
3. We Are Part Of A New Family
- We need each other. We are all dirt. We might be different shades of dirt, but we’re all dirt.
- We are forever tied to each other.
- Relationships are greater than possessions. The church needs to take care of its own.
- We should value people over stuff.
- The early church was enthralled by the glorious message of the gospel.
3 Barriers To Generosity
- We do not view our relationship with God as comprehensive.
- We do not see ourselves as an eternal family. We need a good persecution every few years.
- Poor self-perception. We often have a hunger for significance and self-control.
