Tim Tebow has become appointment television at the Dodd household. Not just for me, but for my wife as well. Like many people, she is a nominal football fan. Basically whatever she knows about current NFL and college happenings come through osmosis because I’m always watching it.
However, lately when we drive home from church on Sunday mornings, here are the questions, in order, that I am getting from her:
- How did you like the sermon?
- How did you like the music?
- Did you get a chance to talk to Crawford (Loritts, my pastor)?
- What are we eating for lunch?
- What time do the Falcons play? -Â We live in the Atlanta area.
- What time does Tebow play?Â
When a sports story makes my wife’s radar, you know it is a big deal.
I asked her to tell me why she is so fascinated with the Tim Tebow story. I thought she would be a good barometer to determine why Tebow has entered into the social consciousness. Her answers were the following;
- “He’s a Christian who’s getting beat up because he doesn’t fit the traditional mold of a quarterback in his (throwing and running) form.”
- “The last time I checked, John Elway nor all the men on SportsCenter are God. Who are they to determine what a certain form is acceptable to throw a ball.”
- “If you can throw a ball and someone can catch a ball and run in for a touchdown, I would say we are listening to the wrong voices regarding Tim Tebow. His performance and the score are doing the talking.”
- “I wish I could say he’s cute and looks good in tights. But he’s none of that. He’s the underdog. The football establishment doesn’t like him. They’re against him but the people love him!”
- “He’s humble. He’s a peacemaker. And he’s trying to please everybody why they’re shooting him.”
Well there you have it – Tim Tebow is a Christian so there is the faith angle. He’s an underdog so we can all relate to him on some level. He’s a nice guy so he connects with others. And of couse everyone loves a winner.
Here is why I think we all love Tebow.  We are looking at the real thing. He is an authentic Christian. He unashamedly loves Jesus. He cares about hospitals in the Phillipines more than football and fame. He honors his parents. He’s polite, even to Elway. His teammates love him. He makes other people better. He is the type of person we all want our sons to grow up to become and the type of man we wish our daughters will marry.  And he produces – 2 national championships at Florida, a Heisman trophy, 1st round pick, and he’s 5-1 as a starter. Yes, he’s the real deal.
Leaders, why do you think everyone is so fascinated with Tebow?Â
One more thing – there are two things I got from interviewing my wife. 1. She doesn’t think Tebow is cute. 2. She thinks I am. I guess I should contact Hanes and sign up for a modeling contract! Â
