Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? Better yet, as Amy Jo Martin says in her incredible book Renegades Write The Rules, “Do you smell what The Rock is tweeting?” You may not know Amy Jo but you have seen the impact of her work. She is the founder & CEO of Digital Royalty, which opened in 2009 to help companies, celebrities, professional sports leagues, teams, and athletes build, measure, and monetize their digital universe. I cannot recommend her book enough. Click the image above to learn more.
One of her latest clients is Dwayne Johnson, The Rock. The book covers, among other things, Martin’s strategy in assisting Johnson accumulate 3,490,732 followers in less than two years. As I read an overview of her strategy, I realized the principles could also be utilized by pastors and church leaders to build their online platforms. Some of these principles are listed below:
The following are 20 lessons all pastors and church leaders can learn:
- Twitter is something that you must want to do.
- Twitter is one of the greatest opportunities you will have to multiply mission and vision.
- Twitter allows YOU to have full control of your message.
- Twitter allows you to be scalable allowing more people to enjoy you more often.
- Twitter allows you to do good for others on a larger scale.
- Many church leaders must overcome their initial hesitation about privacy and relevancy.
- You must be willing to share your life with others.
- As The Rock discovered, to be successful in Twitter you must first define and then value your audience.
- After defining your audience, then speak to your audience about things that resonate with them.
- Twitter allows you to humanize yourself.
- There are over one billion people involved in social media worldwide. Pastors and church leaders must actively engage this community.
- To be successful as a leader who uses Twitter, you must be willing to “trade comfort for momentum”. You must be willing to avoid stagnation and be comfortable with “growing pains”.
- To see mission and vision multiplied, you should desire a high retweet (RT) rate. The Rock has a RT rate of 11%. This is high above the 3% rate which is considered the standard for being a major success.
- You must be willing to change your message based upon what works.
- You must be willing to be creative and try new ideas.
- Twitter is a dialogue. Be sure to engage in dialogue with your audience often.
- Use Twitter to ask your audience questions.
- Twitter reminds us that relationships are built over time.
- Twitter reminds us that relationship must be earned.
- And probably most importantly, HAVE FUN!
