Today I am being dispatched by Injoy Stewardship Solutions (ISS) to attend the Chick-Fil-A Leadercast. In an effort to grow in my skills to better add value to pastors and church leaders, I will be live blogging throughout.
The afternoon’s first speaker was former First Lady Laura Bush. The following are his thoughts on leadership in the highest level in government:
Laura Bush
- When I got there (teaching) I found I wasn’t really prepared.
- Nothing prepares you more than actual experience.
- The people you are leading can teach you.
- It (humor) really came in handy when we had two 13-year-old girls.
- It was very important in the White House to have a staff that liked to laugh. It relieves tension.
- Living in the White House together strengthened our marriage.
- The rituals of family life are important in times of crisis.
- When dealing with stress have a routine that leads to good mental health.
- To have the principles and ideals you want to live up to and not veer from those.
- Popularity is fleeting.
- Calm is contagious.
- I didn’t know how much of a podium the First Lady has.
- George and me never really thought about ourselves (after Sept 11).
- Things happen to you that you don’t expect…Figure out how to face those challenges as they come before you.
- Use the things you didn’t want to happen to you to be constructive.
- Treat people with respect…Don’t be mean. Don’t be sarcastic.
- “Children aren’t good at listening to their elders but they are very good at imitating them.” – James Baldwin
- I prayed for them (the troops) every night…When I got in my comfortable sheets I thought about them laying in the sand.
- It is very important that every single child in the U.S. gets an education.
Roarke Denver
- One of the benefits of being in the military is getting access to the Commander and Chief.
- Nothing like the burden of a mother.
