This week I am being dispatched by Injoy Stewardship Solutions (ISS) to attend the 2014 National Association Of Church Business Administrators (NACBA) Conference. In an effort to grow in my skills to better add value to pastors and church leaders, I will be live blogging throughout.
If you are attending the event, please stop by our booth #514. I would love to connect in person and give you a free copy of my book the 10 Indispensable Practice Of The 2-Minute Leader along with a study guide. Also, if you have not signed up for our FREE July 22nd online event How To Grow A Church, click here to do so today.
The session I attended today was conducted by Dr. Gregory Hunt, former senior pastor of First Baptist Church Shreveport (La) and founder of Directions. Dr. Hunt’s session was entitled Leading Congregations Through Crisis. The following are 20 leadership quotes I captured during the session:
- Risk Management is a standard arm of the church business.
- Congregational crises are a fact of life.
- It is amazing how no-brainers (like point #2) have to be spoken over and over again.
- Congregations should proactively determine how tragic community events affect their congregations.
- When congregations lose key leaders it sends a shutter throughout the church.
- A congregational crisis is not a matter of “If” but “When”. Is your congregation ready?
- Effective leadership is crucial to a positive outcome.
- “Leadership is doing the right things. Management is doing things right.” – Peter Drucker
- “Leadership is about people. Management is about process.” – Gene Klann
- Leadership is about influencing in our sphere of influence to respond creatively to respond to crises.
- Leaders manage and managers lead.
- I have never met anyone who does not have a sphere of influence. Everyone is a leader.
- I’ve been in a lot of conversations with pastors who got into mystery because they want to care for people and didn’t develop their leadership. And when crises hits, pastors who are caregivers only do not manage crises care well.
- Leaders think beyond compassion and pastoral care to systems. It is what I do as a pastor to think ahead tactically.
- The principles of leading well through crisis are not a mystery.
- You really have to be clear-headed (cool) when crises strike.
- Often the case in crises, you get wrong information.
- Crises are an opportunity for learning and growth.
- Congregations can get in front of crisis.
- A congregation’s not-so-secret advantage in crisis is God
