In an effort to add maximum value to pastors and church leaders, INJOY Stewardship Solutions has dispatched me to attend the Double Conference at NewSpring Church. During the next two days, I will be bringing some of the top leadership lessons from the conference designed to challenge and equip pastors and church leaders to double in weekly attendance.
Today’s final session was also conducted by the amazing Perry Noble. The following are 53 leadership quotes and lessons will challenge your thinking about what it takes to grow a church:
- Growing People Change.
- Most of people who made mistakes loved God. They just made some bad decisions. Where does that person go? We kick people out of church and call it church discipline. If you ever meet anyone who is excited about church discipline, that person doesn’t have any friends.
- I had lunch with busted up person after busted up person after busted up person. And they all called me pastor.
- Beware when only pretty people are showing up calling you pastor. Because pretty people are always hiding something.
- What happens to the teenage girl when she gets pregnant in your church? Instead of getting kicked out, she needs to be brought in.
- If we’re going to have churches that are able to grow, we need to have churches where people can be messy.
- Before change can happen confession needs to happen and the church needs to be the safest place to confess.
- You’ve go to have two environments where growing people can change, you’ve got to have a strong children’s ministry. Have clean, safe and fun. The first question all parents ask is, “Did you have fun?”
- If you have a clean, safe environment they will more bible than you ever thought possible.
- You’ve got to have a strong student ministry.
- One of the most popular sayings right now is “Student Ministry is dead.” Someone forgot to tell our student ministry staff.
- We had 4,200 students last night at all our campuses. I’m not mad about that!
- If you’re going to have a strong student ministry you’re going to have to fund it. If you’re cemetery budget is better funded than your student ministry you’re dying. Half those people in the church cemetery aren’t in Heaven anyway. They just got buried at the church.
- Funding does not mean fundraisers. Senior Pastor, you are the fundraiser for the student ministry.
- Is the best use of your student minister washing cars? Don’t make the kids sell doughnuts. The senior adults don’t sell doughnuts.
- 20-30 of our staff members were once part of our children’s and student ministry. We hire them young so we don’t have to beat the seminary out of them.
- Growing Churches Change. Growing Leaders Change.
- In most churches, the change going on in the church is in direct proportion with the change going on in the leader.
- What are you learning as a leader? Who are you learning from? We learn from people who actually haven’t done anything. If they haven’t done it, I don’t care.
- One of the biggest problems in the world is Christian leaders are cheap.
- If you’re a leader who has ever considered going to Israel, you need to go. It will do more for your leadership than anything.
- I Can’t Do Life Alone.
- Groups ministry is the hardest job in the church. You can’t force Christian community.
- We investigated many churches who state they do groups well and stated a certain percentage, lied.
- Groups are essential for churches that are growing.
- The myth in the church is that we know everybody. We actually only know an average of 53.
- One of the biggest problems in the church is when a person gets saved on Sunday, on Friday night their old friends call.
- I would argue that for a new believer groups are actually more important than reading their Bible. The church didn’t have a Bible for the first 350 years. What did they do? What did they have though? Each other.
- For a brand new believer, putting them in the right environment is more important than shoving the bible down their throat. If you put them in the right environment, they will crave the Word of God.
- Two or three times a year we do a big groups push from the stage.
- We don’t ask people to join a group long-term. We just ask them for six weeks.
- I Can’t Outgive God.
- Money creates tension.
- About once or twice a year, every leader is going to get a financial test. God is going to find out if you are a prostitute or a prophet.
- You will either sell the vision or keep the vision.
- I’ve got to feed my family. Actually, it’s God that feeds your family.
- Money is the only sin in the church we apologize for preaching on.
- It takes money to run a church.
- If you’ve got a checking account you’re a business. I know a lot of churches who said they weren’t a business that are going out of business.
- If your vision is bigger than your current resource, you are on the right path. – Jeff Henderson
- There’s a couple of reasons pastors don’t preach on money – They’re not giving. You should be one of the top givers in your church every year. We check staff tithing records…If it’s a heart issue we fire them. Why would we let other people spend tithe money when they’re not tithing. If you got a problem with that, you’re robbing God.
- Anytime your pastor is preaching on money, pray for him because he’s going to get attacked.
- Jesus said the #1 competitor for our hearts is money.
- Why would we shy away from preaching on the #1 thing that competes with the human heart?
- The only cat that screams when the rocking chair rocks is the cat that got his tail rocked on.
- Some people preach on grace giving. Some teach on tithing. These people are broke. These people have money.
- There’s a difference between teaching and preaching.
- I believe most people want to give. They just don’t think they can.
- When I challenge people to give, if you think we’re after your money, tithe to another church.
- When Jesus died on the cross, He died to set us free in every area of our lives.
- Don’t spend money that people promise you. Spend money that you have.
- The best advertisement you have in your church are the people in your church who are excited about your church.
- You can give without loving but you can’t love without giving.
