For many leaders reading this post, you will be hiring key personnel in 2015. The question becomes what should you look for? On December 17th, ESPN.com writer Jeff Legwold examined the Denver Broncos ability to locate top talent in unusual places. You can read the full article by clicking here. As I read Legwold’s analysis, I gleaned 10 Qualities Of A Person You Should Hire In 2015.
Whether you are a church, non-profit, business or sports team, this list provides a nice checklist when interviewing potential team members:
- Hire People With An Established Resume – In addition to later-round and undrafted free agents, the Broncos fortified their roster by signing top free agents such as Peyton Manning, Wes Welker, Demarcus Ware and Aqib Talib.
- Hire People Who Fit Your Culture And DNA – Team President John Elway said potential team members must “know and understand the culture we want with the Denver Broncos”.
- Hire People Who Are Coachable And Continual Learners – Elway continued, “The bottom line is — hopefully we can coach them.”
- Hire People With Passion – Sometimes it is what’s inside that counts. When deciding between two equally qualified candidates, always hire the one with the most passion. Elway gave great insight into this idea. He said, “The bottom line is it comes from the player. It comes from the player from inside out and what he can do as a player.”
- Hire People With Self-Awareness – Broncos head coach John Fox said, “You see football awareness, football character – just the awareness more than anything regardless of what position.”
- Hire People Who Can Make An Immediate Impact – The needs of your organization often do not afford you the privilege of a long runway for development. Starting middle linebacker Steven Johnson, a 2012 undrafted free agent, made an immediate impact on special teams.
- Hire People Who Are Available – The most important ability a leader often has is availability. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio noted about Johnson, “I never have to go looking for Stevie, he’s always right there.”
- Hire People You Can Trust – Johnson said. “That they can trust me, that I stayed in the playbook and I’m ready to go.”
- Hire People Who Are The Best Candidates – Poor leaders often make hiring decisions on a number of items other than who is the most qualified. The Broncos’ leading rusher C.J. Anderson, a 2013 undrafted free agent, said, “[The Broncos] have shown they will play undrafted guys if they end up being the best guys.”
- Hire People Who Produce – Anderson concludes, “As a player you just want a chance, an opportunity. If you do the work, know your assignments and get results, they will play you.”
