13 Signs Leaders Do Not Trust Their Employees

Recently, I read an article from the LinkedIn Talent Blog (full article here) which identified 12 signs a company does not trust their employees.  The following is their list:

  1. Giving instructions instead of goals.
  2. Making an employee use personal time off to leave early for a dentist appointment.
  3. Having managers work all hours of the night.
  4. Having a policy for everything.
  5. Having insane amounts of approvals.
  6. Not allowing their workers to telecommute.
  7. Monitoring employees’ internet usage.
  8. Withholding information from their employees.
  9. Keep someone around they think is inept.
  10. Giving demands, instead of having conversations.
  11. Ignoring their employees’ complaints.
  12. Ultimately, not trusting themselves.

Recently, Bryan Miles, co-founder of MAG Bookkeeping and an absolutely incredible leader, also discussed an additional sign employees are not trusted – Delegation.

Check out Bryan’s thoughts below and find out if you are a great delegator:

“As a leader, if you want to have BIG impact in this world, you must delegate. Delegate often.

Delegation is a stewardship issue of your leadership.

If you don’t like the word ‘delegate’ exchange it with ‘empower.’

When a leader fails to delegate – they are telling their team/employees – they cannot be trusted with what you value.

When you delegate … and set clear expectations of results with what has been delegated … you’ll see appropriate pride swell in their heart.

Trust is the currency of delegation.

The speed of trust is directly connected to your ability to grow as a leader.

What’s more important? Get the job done eventually by you … OR … develop other leaders from yours? Delegation is the platform for leadership development.

Delegate results not tasks. Show them the end-game you want/need them to achieve for you.

Be intentional with your delegation. Do not give it away and pick it back up. Once you delegate, and set expectations, encourage and teach – but NEVER pick back up what you have delegated. Make them own your delegated items. Burn the bridge with them on delegated items.

You have arrived at a new place in your leadership when other leaders ask to take results/things/tasks away from you – to free you up to lead at a higher level.

Give your leaders enough of you – so they know where they can help you offload items/results/tasks.

You want a BIG impact in this world? Start delegating.”
