5 Things Pastors And Business Leaders Should Look For When Hiring Key Staff

Whether you are a church, business, non-profit, or athletic organization, sooner or later you will have to recruit, replace or assign someone into a new leadership position.

The question then becomes what are some of the qualities of an ideal candidate?

In the November 20th edition of USA Today, writer Tom Pelissero wrote about the process the Detroit Lions are going through to select their next general manager.  The Lions formed a panel of former league executives and coaches to vet a group of candidates before making a final decision.

Their criteria provides a good template for pastors and business leaders to begin looking for in their potential hires.

Based upon the search committee’s findings, the following are 5 Things Pastors And Business Leaders Should Look For When Hiring Key Staff:

  1. A Proven Track Record Of Success – Chris Ballard, the current Director of Football Operations for the Kansas City Chiefs, previously scouted for the Chicago Bears for 12 years.
  2. Learned From Great Leaders And Organizations – Leaders are learners and the best leaders often learned from the best.  Eric DeCosta, the current Assistant General Manager of the Baltimore Ravens, has learned at the feet of arguably the game’s best general manager, Ozzie Newsome.
  3. Is Experiencing Current Success – One thing you will notice about all five candidates is they are each currently employed.  The most talented people are almost always unavailable.  You must go get them.  George Paton, longtime assistant to Minnesota Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman, has helped construct one of pro football’s best rosters.
  4. High Intelligence – Chris Polian, the current Director of Player Personnel of the Jacksonville Jaguars, served under his brilliant father, the legendary Hall of Famer Bill Polian, for three years as the Indianapolis Colts Vice President and General Manager.
  5. Continual Growth –  Smart organizations look for individuals who have shown continual growth and are always getting better.  Eliot Wolf, Director of Player Personnel for the Green Bay Packers, has continually been promoted up the company’s ladder since joining the team in 2004.

A Proven Track Record Of Success, Learned From Great Leaders And Organizations, Currently Successful, High Intelligence and Continual Growth.  If you are looking for a new leader, start with candidates who possess these qualities and you will be well on your way to finding a great leader.
