This is the second day I will be live blogging from the ReThink Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA. ReThink, open exclusively to senior pastors, campus pastors and executive pastors, is a unique gathering of church leaders who are committed to solving the biggest challenges facing your church and the Church.
Injoy Stewardship Solutions has dispatched me to attend this amazing event as a way to invest in your growth. They also want to invest in your leadership by offering you our latest FREE ebook Breaking The Next Growth Barrier: 10 Things Pastors Can Do To Break Down Growth Barriers by clicking HERE for your complimentary copy.
Today’s next speakers were Jon Acuff and Heather Lawson. Heather is the Executive Pastor at Willow Creek Community Church. The following are 29 leadership quotes I captured from their sessions:
Jon Acuff
- Leadership doesn’t have to be boring.
- Everyone who has accomplished nothing has a video coaching series.
- In public speaking, practice enough to know the stuff but be open enough that stuff shows up.
- Craft is building on what shows up.
- You don’t have to be funny. You have to be you.
- In a talk there are two parts. The Island which is the main idea. And the Bridge is what gets you to the next idea.
- Satire takes a small issue and makes it big enough that we all see it.
- Satire is about a situation. Mockery is about an individual.
- A lot of humor is admitting what people already think and amplifying it.
- I try to put handles on ideas so people can carry them.
Heather Lawson
- We start with an executive team which forms the nucleus of the leadership of the church.
- We are in the midst of a multi-year succession plan.
- Every single person around the table must be known for what they bring as you move towards a common goal.
- Bill is so great with ideas.
- No surprises. No leader wants to be surprised.
- Knowing the things he cares about most I know what to communicate to Bill.
- We keep short accounts and good communication.
- Leading around the circle it is important to know what each other’s personal goals are.
- Influence matters far more than position.
- There is no one person who is going to replace a 40-year founding pastor.
- What someone grows up is very different than someone can walk into.
- In the succession process, we are not looking for just one person.
- The very best leader I can be is the one God created me to be.
- Leadership is not touch football. It’s tackle football.
- I want young leaders when they leave Willow they are more of who God created them to be than when they arrived.
- Lead well. Love well.
- Everyday I want to have movement.
- We are better in what we do together than what one person can accomplish.
- Nobody wants to work with a Yes person.
