The day’s final speaker was Commander Rorke T. Denver.  He has run every phase of training for the U.S. Navy SEALs and led special-forces missions in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and other international hot spots.  The following are 20 Leadership Quotes and Lessons from his inspirational session:

  1. The Spartans would go into battle with three pieces of equipment – spear, sword, and a shield.
  2. If they lost they spear or sword, no problem. The shield protected the Spartan from neck to knee. But it also protected your teammates when locked together. If you lost your shield, you were saying you were unwilling to protect the Spartans.
  3. Leadership is about carrying that shield. It’s about protecting that culture and the people around you.
  4. Win the gunfight first.
  5. If you don’t, no one is going home.
  6. Play without a safety net. We’ve developed this entire world to avoid pain and discomfort and it’s a mistake.
  7. When things get touch and you’re out a limb, things will be comfortable.
  8. 90% 10% Rule. 90% of your behavior should be predictable.
  9. 10% of the time throw your team curve balls. Keep them off balance. It’s a gift to them.
  10. Leadership ain’t complex. It’s simple. I didn’t say it wasn’t hard. But it’s simple.
  11. It is the menial tasks that get the most respect from your troops. Take your own trash out. Make your own coffee. You get your hands dirty.
  12. If you can’t explain a topic or issue on a single piece of paper, you don’t understand it well enough.
  13. We will never stop in this fight.
  14. The people we are fighting against don’t have the endurance we do.
  15. It took Abraham Lincoln 278 words to write the Gettysburg Address.  Simple.
  16. Leaders think there is a premium or need to find great ideas.
  17. I don’t think there’s that many great ideas. I think there are a lot of good ideas with a buttload of hard work and passion.
  18. Great ideas are good ideas people couple with hard work.
  19. You can control being the hardest worker in the room.
  20. As leaders you got to sprint hard all the time. If you do, your troops will sprint hard all the time.
