12 Leadership Lessons And Quotes From Jason Bourne

https://youtu.be/HOQh9KwJqwg

There were two movies this summer I could not wait to see.  One was Captain America: Civil War which did not disappointment.  The second was Matt Damon reprising his signature role in the movie Jason Bourne.  This film exceeded all expectations as well.  The fourth, OK fifth, installment in the franchise if you count The Bourne Legacy with Jeremy Renner, is absolutely outstanding!

As you would expect, there was two hours of non-stop, pulse-pounding action.  Enough this summer with the animation and CGI.  Finally, a movie for guys who like movies.

One complaint – there were two GDs.  Completely unnecessary.  Why did they put them in there?  Past that, this is a great movie!

The following are 12 Leadership Lessons And Quotes From Jason Bourne:

  1. Great Leaders Attract Other Great Leaders – If you want to develop a leadership culture at your church or organization, start by hiring great leaders.  They will attract other great leaders.  Matt Damon had reportedly resisted making another Bourne film.  However, when the opportunity presented itself to once again work with Paul Greengrass, the director of sequels The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, he signed on.  The best always want to work with the best.
  2. Speak To Your Core Audience And Not Your Critics – Critics are giving Jason Bourne solid but not great reviews.  This movie is not for critics.  It is for the Bourne core audience and we were not disappointed.  Pastors, this is a good word for you on Sundays.  Speak to your core audience.  You will always have critics.
  3. Great Leaders Value Action And Accomplishment More Than Words – Amazingly, Bourne only has 37 lines in the movie.  This character is the personification of the strong, silent type.  However, his actions scream louder than his words ever could.
  4. Great Leaders Recognize Opportunity In Times Of Chaos – Where there is great uncertainty, confusion, or chaos there is great opportunity for a leader to rise up with solutions.  Bourne use a riot outside the Greek Parliament building as an opportunity for an escape.
  5. Great Leaders Are Comfortable In Chaos – Except for extreme cases, Bourne never runs.  He is always walking with a purpose.  Bourne never seems stressed or overwhelmed which leads to my next point.
  6. Great Leaders Trust Their Preparation And Training – A leader’s confidence flows from their preparation and training.
  7. Great Leaders Are Decisive During Times Of Chaos – Passivity harms both leaders and those they are called to serve.  Passivity causes people to lose trust in the leader.  They say, “He doesn’t know what he’s doing.”  Gather information and then make decisive action.
  8. Great Leaders Do Not Panic During Times Of Chaos – Being decisive is not enough.  You actually need to stay calm, think clearly and then make good decisions.  Good decisions build trust and allow your team to succeed.
  9. Great Leaders Remove Clutter During Times Of Chaos – There is a direct correlation between the amount of clutter and the amount of confusion a leader has.  Bourne only needs a small amount of resources to be successful.
  10. Leaders Are Always Being Watched – This is the responsibility which comes with influence.
  11. Leaders Who Stay Relevant Are Always In Demand – “(CIA director Robert) Dewey’s problem was he belonged in the past.  Kalloor is part of the future.”  CIA leader Heather Lee makes this observation about Dewey and Aaron Kalloor who heads up the Facebook-like organization Deep Dream.
  12. Always Leave Your Audience Wanting More – They have setup another film.  Yes!!!

Once again, Jason Bourne is the best time I have had at the movies in quite awhile.  Go watch it this weekend and enjoy yourself.  And I hope Damon and Greengrass start filming the next installment soon!
