This is a post I have wanted to write for a long time. There are countless articles written on how to become a successful leader. In fact, I have added many logs to that fire. But there are very few posts, articles and books written on how to REMAIN a successful leader.
Lasting leadership is a topic many people do not address. Perhaps it has become so rare.
The following are 6 Reasons A Leader Remains In Leadership And Why Many Do Not. To describe this type of individual, I took each letter of the word “REMAIN” and built a profile of someone who remains in leadership for an extended period of time. See if you know someone like this.
R – Resilience – This speaks to passion. Nowhere in the Bible did God call someone to an easy task. No matter what a person faces, the calling on this person’s life is so strong they will press into and through the issues they are facing. Resilience is often fueled by another “R” word – Responsibility. To put it in fundamental terms, sometimes you do what you have to do to put food on the table for your family.
E – Environment – This speaks to culture. Author Jon Gordon says, “Culture drives expectations and beliefs. Expectations and beliefs drive behavior. Behavior drives habits. Habits create the future.” You hire the culture you want. Lasting leaders have created a healthy environment and protect it.
M – Makeup – This speaks to character. This is who a leader is at his or her core. Of the six qualities listed this is the most important. Character is what sustains a leader wherever their talent make take them.
A – Attitude – John Maxwell often says, “Your attitude determines your altitude.” Leaders who last have teams that CAN help them. This speaks to their skill. But they also have teams who WANT to help them. This speaks to loyalty. You cannot last as a leader without both. All things being equal, give me a leader with a great attitude with marginal skill over a one with a poor attitude and tremendous skill any day of the week.
I – Intelligence – This speaks to the leader being a continual learner. Things are always changing, always advancing, and doing so at a rapid pace. A leader who does not increase their intelligence will be quickly left behind.
N – Neighborly – This speaks to the emotional intelligence and the prioritization of relationships. Lasting leaders are kind. Their people and customers know the leader wants the best for them. Teams will fight hell with a water pistol for this type of leader.
What is one thing from this list you can improve on to become a lasting leader?
