11 Lessons From The Best Introduction To A Leadership Book I Have Ever Read

Each year I will read 40-50 leadership books.  The are several reasons for this but the top two reasons are I enjoy reading and know I have to get much, much better to become the leader God has called me to be.

Today I received my copy of Seth Davis’s new book Getting To Us: How Great Coaches Make Great Teams.  The reason I pre-ordered the book is because I enjoy Seth’s writing style but also because of the leaders he profiled – Urban Meyer, Mike Krzyzewski, Geno Auriemma, Brad Stevens, Dabo Swinney, and others.  You can order your copy by clicking HERE or on the image provided.

I have only read the introduction but I cannot wait to dive into chapter one which is a profile of Coach Meyer.  This book has The Best Introduction To A Leadership Book I Have Ever Read.  The leadership lessons are so good I wanted to share them with you.

The following contains 11 leadership lessons I have already gleaned.  I am sure more lessons will come in the future.

  1. “A team begins as a collection of mes, hims, and yous.  It is the job of the coach to figure out a way to get to Us.”
  2. “They (great coaches) will be the first to tell you that much of their success is rooted in the good fortune to coach great players at great organizations or universities.”
  3. “Persistence is the strain of character one leans upon during those quiet moments when self-doubt creeps in.  it is both tested and manufactured during childhood and early-adulthood adversity.”
  4. “It is evinced in the day-to-day mundane routines, the unglamorous aspects that make up the bulk of the time spent on the job.  Those tasks are performed in solitude when the fans are gone and the cameras are nowhere in sight.”
  5. “Persistence is the mortar that holds the bricks together when the high winds blow.”
  6. “No two athletes are alike.  The one thing that great coaches have most in common is the ability to discern the different ways to motivate each guy.”
  7. “What makes them great coaches is their refusal to be something they’re not.”
  8. “There is no trust without authenticity.”
  9. “Acquiring… knowledge takes time and passion.  It is accrued during late, lonely nights spent poring over videos, not to mention a lifetime of reading books and articles, attending clinics, and picking the brains of mentors who came before.”
  10. “Knowledge without adaptability will eventually diminish a leader’s effectiveness.  People change, games change, times change.
  11. “Good people with good intentions can give bad advice if they do not know enough about their craft.”

These lessons were just from the Introduction!  This appears to be a book every leader needs to read.  You can order a copy HERE.
