10 Steps To Creating A Vision For Your Church Or Organization

Last evening I posted 62 Quotes And Lessons On Vision And Leadership From Dr. Johnny Hunt.  At the conclusion of his session, he also added some incredible insights on developing a vision.  His comments are applicable whether you lead a family, church, non-profit, school, business, or athletic organization.

The following are 10 Steps To Creating A Vision For Your Church Or Organization.  The comments below are direct quotes or paraphrases from Pastor Johnny.

  1. It must excite you if it’s going to excite the people.  If I write a sermon and it doesn’t speak to me, I throw it in the trash.
  2. Your vision must solve a problem.  For instance, your family and neighbors are dying without Christ.
  3. Your vision must have a sense of urgency.  We have a task to do and time is fleeting.
  4. Vision travels through the people.  You have got to get the leadership of your church on board first.
  5. Vision brings clarity. If everything is important, nothing is important.  What is your action plan?
  6. Will the vision outlast you?  When you are dead and gone can your leadership play on?  Inheritance is not what you leave for someone.  It is what you leave in someone.
  7. If prayer isn’t necessary to accomplish the vision it is too small.  Without faith it is impossible to please God. What you pray for shows your priority?  The Baptist church spends more time praying for 90-year-olds to get healed than 12-year-olds from going to Hell.
  8. Ravi Zacharias said, “People listen with their eyes.”  People make assumptions with their eyes.  They must see with their ears.
  9. Clear, do you know where you are going?  It may take time for others to join you.
  10. Celebrate the wins.  For many leaders, this takes the longest.

In addition to the 10 items listed above, you need to be SMART about developing and then communicating your vision.

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable.  The fear of goal setting.  People are scared they won’t reach them.  I would rather shoot for the moon and at least make it into space than to never leave the ground.
  • A – Attainable.  The Spirit of God will never lead you to a place the grace of God cannot provide.
  • R – Realistic.
  • T – Tangible.

What is one thing you learned about vision-casting from the notes above that will make you a more effective leader?
