“I Hate Mondays!”

“I hate Mondays!”  How many times have you heard friends or co-workers say these words?  Perhaps you have even uttered them yourself.  Mondays cause so much stress that 21% of heart attacks happen then with the majority taking place between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.  You can read a full report here.

As leaders this is a trend we must address.

For the next two days I am attending the UNITE 2018 inside-sales conference in Atlanta.  Dispatched by INJOY Stewardship Solutions, I am here to work on my craft and find ways for my team and I to serve pastors and churches even better.

One of my favorite speakers was Gene Hammett.  He is addressing the Monday issue.  I loved his statement “My big vision is for everyone to love Mondays.”

If you are unfamiliar with Gene, he is the author of the book The Trap Of Success and writer for Inc Magazine.  He is also a renowned leadership speaker.  His focus is on the hyper-growth strategies of Inc 5000 companies and their CEOs.

His session was entitled Cultivating Ownership to Active HyperGrowth.  The following are 16 quotes from his session on what is needed to create a hypergrowth organization:

  1. There is a huge gap between responsibility and ownership.
  2. The Fortune 500 companies aren’t growing much – only .3%.
  3. This is because the pace of change.  52% of the companies in the year 2000 are not on the list today.
  4. The second reason is a rising sense of apathy.  Engagement is not the enemy.  Leadership defines the culture.  The real enemy is leadership.
  5. Most companies have 4-40% growth over 3 years.   The very top of the Inc 5000 companies are experiencing 2731% growth. (This is hypergrowth).
  6. Your goal is to get people to feel like owners.
  7. My big vision is for everyone to love Mondays.
  8. Leadership that activates ownership is what activates hyper-growth.
  9. Ownership answers either ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’  There are no shades of gray.
  10. “If I have to tell you what to do tomorrow I can always find someone to do it cheaper.” – Seth Godin
  11. The strongest force you face in the office is status quo.  This is the way we’ve always done it.
  12. As a leader you can’t pull the team into growth.  If you’re a team and have a bad leader you can’t grow.  You need both.
  13. 82% of hyper-growth companies had shared goals.  If you want real ownership you need company goals, team goals, and personal goals.
  14. 87% of hyper-growth companies value radical transparency.  The problem is many leaders think you can’t handle the truth.
  15. Ask people what did you fail at this week and develop plans to get better.  Celebrate failure and move forward.
  16. Your identity has to change.  It is an awakening.  You’re a leader.

What is one thing you read in the list above which can cause hypergrowth in your organization?
