This past Sunday Klutch Sports released the following press statement:
“LeBron James, four time NBA MVP, three time NBA finals MVP, fourteen time NBA All Star, and two time Olympic gold medalist has agreed to a four year, $154 million contract with the Los Angeles Lakers”
Those 36 words changed the NBA landscape. What is interesting is why James made this decision. USA Today writer Jeff Zillgitt wrote a compelling article on James’s thought process which you can read here.
As I read his thoughts I discovered it had implications for all leaders. If you are wanting to attract top leaders, this is how they make decisions.
The following are 5 Reasons LeBron James Chose The Los Angeles Lakers And Why It Matters To All Leaders:
- The Best Leaders’s Major Decisions For Leaders Are Family Decisions – Location. Location. Location. James’s wife and three children are excited to be living in Los Angeles.
- The Best Leaders Must Feel Comfortable With The Community In Which They Are Going To Live – The James family already own two homes in the city.
- The Best Leaders Look For Organizations With A Bright Future – James believes that with the team’s core of young players they are in position to soon contend for a championship.
- The Best Leaders Bet On Themselves – When Paul George decided to remain with the Oklahoma City Thunder, James still felt they could build a contending team. He was willing to go alone if necessary.
- Working For An Iconic Franchise Is Attractive To The Best Leaders – Brands matter. With its 16 championships and legendary players, the Lakers are NBA royalty. Top leaders want to be part of this type of organization.
