14 Things To Look For When Hiring Coaches Or Leaders In 2018 – 2019

There are literally going to be thousands of coaches and leaders hired over the next year.  When the time comes for your organization to select the right person to lead your team or organization, do you know a leader when you see one?  If so, can you spot the right leader for you?  All leaders are not created equally.

On January 12, 2017, the Los Angeles Rams hired the perfect leader for their organization when Sean McVay was selected as the team’s 28th head coach since their inception.  In many circles, McVay was considered a risky hire.  At 30 years old, he was the youngest head coach in the history of the NFL.  Those who doubted McVay have been proven wrong, very wrong.

In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Apostle Paul told his young disciple Timothy, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”  I do not know about the young McVay’s speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, but he has set the example in numerous other areas.

On October 11, NFL analyst and scout Bucky Brooks appeared on The Herd With Colin Cowherd show.  Amongst the many topics they discussed, one was the coaching brilliance of McVay.  The following are 14 Things To Look For When Hiring Coaches Or Leaders In 2018 – 2019 I gleaned from Brooks’ comments.  First is the lesson followed by Brooks’ comments.

  13. When Hiring Coaches Or Leaders In 2018 Look For Someone Humble Enough To Learn From Anyone – Smart leaders know the best ideas, regardless of who or where they come from, are the ones which should win.  Pro football coaches have traditionally not looked to the college, and especially the high school, for ideas.  Brooks says of McVay, “He has taken some things that are high school and collegiate-like and he’s wearing people out.”
  14. When Hiring Coaches Or Leaders In 2018 Look For Someone Who Gives Others Confidence – One of the greatest gifts a leader can give to those on their team is a sense of belief.  Brooks concludes, “He has given Jared Goff the confidence that everyone wants to see from a franchise quarterback.”

What is one thing you learned from Brooks’ assessment of Sean McVay which can help you when hiring a coach or leader in 2018 – 2019?
