  1. Pastors battle with spiritual warfare more than anyone else. And we have to fight our own personal demons.
  2. It’s hard to have friends because we’re always on.
  3. We have a hard time trusting because we’ve been burned so much.
  4. I’m writing a book on betrayal.
  5. My best friends are pastors. No one knows what we do.  It’s a calling.
  6. I deal with loneliness a lot. Because as a leader, you are by yourself.
  7. We get older and have to stay relevant.
  8. Be who you are and understand your stage in life.
  9. You chase cool because you’re either cool or you’re not.
  10. Stay young in your spirit but be comfortable in your skin.
  11. We struggle with changing techniques.
  12. Don’t do multi-sites unless you’re a freak.They’re overrated.
  13. Craig Groeschel and Steven Furtick could run Apple.
  14. Somebody needs to write the book How To Close A Multisite.
  15. We cancelled a lot of multisites. We need more and more people to cancel multisites.
  16. If the horse is dead, dismount. Don’t be shy to cancel stuff.
  17. Everything in the church world is cyclical.
  18. Church growth is shuffling sheeple.
  19. You have seasons of growth, seasons when plateau.
  20. We, pastors, with breakthrough or breakdown preaching.
  21. I’m not hearing as much about the breakdown – the blood, repentance, denying yourself.
  22. Lust is a God-given desire which has gone haywire.
  23. How about all the channels on your television set?I can’t handle those channels.  I don’t trust myself.
  24. Lust is something we all deal with.
  25. We’ve animalized humans and humanlized animals.
  26. Without the Gospel we’re toast.
  27. We fight for evangelism vs the deeper life.
  28. All rescues happen in deep water. The deepest churches are those who are about evangelism.  To have discipleship, you have to have people getting saved.
  29. You’re going be beat up some. That comes with dealing with your sin, and chicanery and stuff.
  30. We need to talk about Heaven and hell and eternity. This is a positive thing.
  31. We have a lot of intellectual naval-gazing churches here in Dallas.
  32. Staff members are cycling through like never before.One of the reasons is the fantasy of social media.
  33. Our families absorb the wear and tear of ministry more than anyone.
  34. Our kids absorb stuff on a different level.

  46. A lot of people can’t take the heart. That’s OK. People have left our church for 28 years.
  47. Pastors, this is the highest calling in the world.
