14 Lessons from John Maxwell’s Teaching on The Pareto Principle

John Maxwell is simply amazing!  As mentioned in last month’s post h, John is passionate about personal growth.  He just keeps growing and growing and growing in every area of his life.  As a result, at 72 years old John Maxwell is the best he has ever been.

Earlier today, I was sent an 10-minute video with John teaching from the second chapter of Developing The Leader Within You 2.0.  The focus of his content were The Pareto Principle and the importance of priorities.  As Johns says, “Your growth, your own learning, should be a top priority if you want to get anywhere other than where you are right now.”

Click the FREE 10-minute video teaching to watch John’s entire lesson for yourself.  You should also take advantage of his online coaching course as well.

The following are 14 Lessons from John Maxwell’s Teaching on The Pareto Principle I captured from John’s teaching:

  1. The key to leadership is priorities.
  2. There’s no such thing as time management.
  3. Tell how you manage something that’s already set?  If you manage or don’t manage time, there’s still 24 hours in a day.
  4. It’s not time management we need to work on.  It’s priority management.  It’s not the time that we have that’s the problem.  It’s what we do with the time.
  5. Two things I realized.  I was doing too many things in my life…  I was doing the wrong things.
  6. That’s a recipe for disaster – doing too many wrong things.
  7. Pareto says, “The top 20% of your priorities will give you an 80% return if you spend 80% of your time on the top 20% of your priorities.”
  8. You have to evaluate or stalemate.
  9. If you’ve got 10 things to do, you shouldn’t be doing 10 things.  You should basically be doing two things.
  10. 20% of the customers will bring in 80% of the profits.
  11. 20% of the employees will generate 80% of the problems.
  12. 20% of the salespeople will generate 80% of the sales.
  13. 20% of the information produces 80% of the decisions.
  14. 20% of your people will take 80% of your time.  Almost always, they’re the wrong 20%… If they’re coming to you, they’re the wrong 20%.

What gets in the Top 20% of my priorities?

  • Requirement – What is required of me?  What do I have to do that no one else can do except me?
  • Return – What gives me my greatest return?  Your return is always going to be in 3 areas – giftedness, experience, and growth.
  • Reward

Once again, John Maxwell has never been better than he is right now.  And with his commitment to personal growth, he is only going to get better.
