Earlier today I had the privilege of watching some leadership training from the master himself John Maxwell. As part of John’s Advanced Growth System and The 15 Laws Of Growth Online Course, he provided 6 Steps To Developing A Personal Growth Plan. You can watch the coaching video yourself by clicking HERE. Trust me, it is a little over 7 minutes of pure gold!!!
The most impactful point for me was Point #6 – Share your growth with someone. John says, “Don’t ever spend time with people who aren’t thrilled with your progress.” Wow!!! Do you know people not happy with your growth. I sure do and I stay cordial with them. They are just not part of my inner-circle or those who influence me.
Make sure you read all the lessons from John’s teaching. The following are John Maxwell’s 6 Steps To Developing A Personal Growth Plan. And if you have not picked up John’s latest book Leadershift: The 11 Essential Changes Every Leader Must Embrace, you can do so today by clicking HERE.
- Make a commitment to intentionally grow.
- It’s really simple.
- If you’re going to grow, you’re going to grow on purpose.
2. Make that commitment public.
- A commitment that is not public is worthless.
- We all have a tendency to stray. We all have a tendency to give up. We all have a tendency to get off-course.
- There’s something beautiful about a shared commitment. A shared commitment becomes a strong commitment.
3. Identify the areas you want to grow in personally.
- When you identify the areas you want to grow in, it should be at least two and no more than five.
- You want to grow in an area of choice and an area of skill.
- I started with attitude and speaking.
4. Invest one hour a day in those two areas.
- You spend the hour this way – Preparation, Practice, Reflection.
- You do it every day.
5. Invest one hour a week on reflection and writing what you’re learning.
- Start jotting before you journal.
6. Share your growth with someone.
- Every week find someone you can share your growth with.
- If you share your growth with someone and they’re happy, do it again the next week.
- If they’re not happy, start moving. Don’t ever spend time with people who aren’t thrilled with your progress.
- The friends I dropped in my early years were those people who weren’t thrilled with my progress.
- I got some new friends.
- If you become intentional in your growth, you’ll outgrow almost everyone you know.
What is one thing from this list you can do today to start intentionally growing?
