If I asked most pastors and church leaders if their church loved its community, they would respond “Yes”.  But do they?

Today, Piedmont Church’s (GA) community pastor Marlon Longacre spoke on the parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10.  As I listened to Marlon’s message I gleaned several truths about what a loving and compassionate church looks like.

The following are 12 Signs Of Church Who Loves Its Community.  First is the sign followed by Marlon’s supporting quote.

  1. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is A Growing Church – “The church that loves is the church that grows.”
  2. A Church Who Loves Its Community Has A Presence In The Community – “If your presence doesn’t make a difference your absence won’t matter.”
  3. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is Aware Of The Needs In Their Community – “You can’t care until you are aware.  There are wounded people all around us.”
  4. A Church Who Loves Its Community Has The Margin To Serve Its Community – “Busyness kills kindness.”
  5. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is A Compassionate Church – “Compassion is knowing everything about someone and loving them anyway.”
  6. A Church Who Loves Its Community Has Been Through A Lot – “We’ve been what we’ve been through to help others get through what they’re going through.”
  7. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is A Church Of Action – “You can’t feel your way into action.  You act your way into feeling.  Feelings follow actions.”
  8. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is An Interrupted Church – “You have to learn to be interrupted .  Love takes time.”
  9. A Church Who Loves Its Community Is A Generous Church – “Spend whatever it takes.  It’s sacrificial.”
  10. A Church Who Loves Its Community Expects Nothing In Return – “Real giving is when you give and expect nothing in return.”
  11. A Church Who Loves Its Community Pays It Forward – “Pay it forward.”
  12. A Church Who Loves Its Community Brings Glory To Jesus Christ – “Bring glory to Jesus Christ by serving those who can’t pay it back.”
