Whether you lead a church, business, non-profit, athletic organization, or a group of educators, you want your team performing at peak efficiency. You want a high-performance organization.
The Minnesota Twins are currently in first place in the American League Central Division. They are young, talented, and built for success for the foreseeable future. In the July 15th edition of Sports Illustrated, writer Joe Sheehan profiled the team. As I read his article I gleaned several lessons which will help all leaders.
The following are 5 Things High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Doing:
- High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Upgrading Weaknesses With Proven Veteran Talent – During the offseason, the Twins signed second baseman Jonathan Schoop and designated hitter Nelson Cruz. They also traded for first baseman C.J. Cron. To date they have produced 53 home runs and 147 RBIs.
- High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Upgrading With Young Talent – Young talent gives an organization a sustainable future. The team hired young manager Rocco Baldelli and a young pitching coach Wes Johnson. This has improved the team’s performance with a focus on improving velocity.
- High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Improving – In fact, they are constantly improving in the area of decision-making. While being one of the last teams to embrace advance analytics, they made up for lost ground by hiring Derek Falvey and Thad Levine to lead in this area. Falvey and Levine came from two of the most innovative teams in baseball.
- High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Developing Talent From Within – The team’s outfield of Max Kepler, Byron Buxton, and Eddie Rosario were all developed in the Twins’ farm system. Young talent is often inexpensive and just ready to enter their prime. As a result…
- High-Performance Organizations Are Constantly Retaining Their Young Talent. – The organization gets a large return on their investments of recruiting, training, and development. They are not in the business of developing and training talent for other organizations.
After reading the list above, what is one thing you can do today which will improve the performance of your organization?
