We are all looking at adding talented people to our team. We become mesmerized when we meet those individuals with natural skill or aptitude our organization desires. It is then you often hear the phrase, “Don’t let them leave the building!”
But when interviewing people to join your team or evaluating existing personnel, do not be blinded by talent. Be more pragmatic in your evaluations. Because the following are 15 Things Talent Isn’t and 15 Things Wasted Talent Is:
- Talent is not hard work. However, talent without hard work is wasted potential.
- Talent is not passion. However, talent without passion is apathy and detachment.
- Talent is not caring. However, talent without caring is selfishness.
- Talent is not going the extra mile. However, talent without going the extra mile is doing the minimum amount possible.
- Talent is not preparation. However, talent without preparation results in unnecessary mistakes.
- Talent is not continual improvement. However, talent without continual improvement will soon equal average performance because others will quickly pass you by.
- Talent is not ownership of the results. However, talent without ownership of the results is indifference, continual excuses and blaming others for your substandard performance.
- Talent is not intelligence. However, talent without intelligence is misdirected energy at best.
- Talent is not competitiveness. However, talent without competitiveness is laziness.
- Talent is not character. However, talent without character equals unsustained success.
- Talent is not service to others. However, talent without service to others is entitlement.
- Talent is not experience. However, talent without experience is exposure. Do not confuse the two.
- Talent is not production. However, talent without production is all talk.
- Talent is not leadership. However, talent without leadership is wasted opportunity.
- As Coach Bechler said in the tweet above, talent is not a choice. However, success is. Talent alone does not equal success.
What is one statement about talent listed above which challenges you the most and why?
