4 Things Your Church, School, Business, Non-Profit, Or Athletic Team Needs To Go To The Next Level

Is your church, school, business, non-profit, or athletic team stuck?  Are you just having problems breaking through the next barrier and can’t figure out why?  If so, this post is for you.

If you are a fan of football or innovation in general, I cannot recommend Warren Sharp’s 2019 Football Preview enough.  It is the most analytical and comprehensive look at why some teams win and others lose I have ever read.  Every NFL team’s analytics are profiled in-depth along with an overall look at league trends.  To give you a taste of what is in the book, check out the tweet above.

I will probably do many blog posts from the book over the next several months but let me start with some observations Warren had regarding the Indianapolis Colts.

The 2017 Indianapolis Colts were leading at halftime in nine of their 16 games and also entering the fourth quarter in nine of their 16 games.  In games they were leading at halftime, the team finished 2-7 (22%).  In games they were leading heading into the fourth quarter, the team finished 4-5 (44%).

Fast forward to 2018.

Interestingly, the 2018 Indianapolis Colts were also leading at halftime in nine of their 16 games and also entering the fourth quarter in nine of their 16 games.  Here is where is fascinating.  In the games they were leading at halftime, the team finished 8-1 (89%).  In games they were leading heading into the fourth quarter, the team also finished 8-1 (89%).

What are the differences?  The following are 4 Things Your Church, School, Business, Non-Profit, Or Athletic Team Needs To Go To The Next Level:

  1. A Leader’s Most Important Ability Is Their Availability – The 2018 Colts had a healthy Andrew Luck at quarterback whereas he missed the entire 2017 season due to injury.
  2. Adapt Or Die – Adjustments are made at halftime.  Obviously, the Colts’ 2017 opponents made the proper adjustments whereas in 2018 they did.  Coaching matters and the Colts got a great one in their new hire Frank Reich.
  3. The Law Of The Edge – This is a theory John Maxwell puts forth in his book The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork: Embrace Them and Empower Your Team.  The Law of the Edge states the difference between two evenly matched teams is leadership. The 2018 team was 3-1 in games decided by 3 points or less.  Once again, give the edge to Coach Reich.
  4. Great Leaders And Great Teams Know How To Finish Well – In addition to being able to adapt, the team obviously improved in their physical conditioning, their ability to thrive in chaos, and improved execution under pressure.

Available and engaged leaders.  Proper Adjustments.  Better leaders.  Finishing Well.  What one of these four principles can you implement today to help your organization get unstuck?
