The Summit’s next speaker was Jason Dorsey.  Jason is President of The Center for Generational Kinetics, which delivers research, speaking and consulting to separate generational myth from truth for leaders around the world. His team has repositioned global brands to win each generation and taken clients from last to first in both employee retention and customer growth.

  1. The number one trend that shapes generations which no one talks about is parenting.
  2. Baby Boomers have a strict parenting philosophy which has come back to haunt them.
  3. Parenting influences everything we do.
  4. Entitlement is primary a learned behavior.
  5. Boomers complained about us.You created us.
  6. Every generation has a natural relationship which technology of their generation which is invisible until we are forced to engage others.
  7. My 8-year-old daughter will never know a time you could not look at a person over the phone.
  8. My daughter will think the Jetsons is about the past.
  9. Technology is only new if you remember it the way it was before. Otherwise, it is all you’ve ever known.
  10. In the same generation, you see differences based upon geography.
  11. Millennials are now the largest generation in the workforce.
  12. Millennials are experiencing delayed adulthood.
  13. The millennial generation is splitting in two…. Around the age of 30 you self-select into the group doing what they are told (mega-llennials) and the group struggling to get traction (me-lliennials). At age 30 they disconnect from and have a problem with the other group.
  14. Late bloomers are now 35 and older.
  15. Millennials are not tech-savvy. Millennials are tech-dependent.
  16. Gen-Xers are not starting to take care of their parents and their kids.They are being pulled into multiple directions.
  17. Gen-Xers are naturally skeptical.
  18. Gen-X is the glue in the organization because they don’t like millennials or baby boomers.
  19. Baby Boomers can read a map that doesn’t talk.
  20. Baby Boomers define work ethic and measure work ethic in hours per week.
  21. Baby Boomers believe they are no shortcuts to success. You must pay your dues.
  22. Gen Z, their parents are primary Gex X or millennials, who raised them very differently.
  23. Gen Z came of age during the great recession.
  24. Gen Z is very practical with their money. They are driving thrift store sales.
  25. Many members of Gen Z are going to leapfrog many millennials.
  26. Provide specific examples of the performance I expect.
  27. The language of leadership varies by interpretation by generation, race, and gender.
  28. Millennials and Gen Z do not think linear. They are outcome driven.
  29. You have to provide quick feedback.
  30. Millennials and Gen Z were taught if your boss is not talking to you, you’re doing something wrong.
  31. Do not leave a voice mail. My dad leaves me a 5-minute voicemail. It’s like a podcast.
  32. Every generation brings something important and every generation can lead.
