10 Leadership Lessons From 47 Meters Down: Uncaged

Today I saw the new movie 47 Meters Down: Uncaged.  It is outstanding!  This movie is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with many startling surprises.  Like The Shallows and 47 Meters Down, this is a great shark movie.

The film is about four high school girls who go scuba diving in recently discovered Mayan caves.  What they discover is they are surrounded by several great white sharks who have adapted to their subterranean environment.  The storyline is straightforward – 4 girls trapped in underwater Mayan caves trying to get out while surrounded by killer sharks hoping to eat them.

There is no language but of course, people get eaten.  For my money, along with Hobbs And Shaw, this is a great way to end the summer movie season.

The following are 10 Leadership Lessons From 47 Meters Down: Uncaged:

  1. Stay With Proven FormulasMike Lombardi often points out you cannot be a great team without tendencies.  In other words, you have proven formulas of success and revisit them often.  Much like Jurassic Park movies where dinosaurs always end up chasing and eating people, shark movies are the same.  Do not overcomplicate them.  Sharks chasing people and eating them is a cash cow!
  2. Do NOT Let Other People Determine Your Schedule – Two of the girls were told by their parents to go on a great white sightseeing tour.  When they saw mean girls/bullies from school on the same tour, they decided to do something different.  In essence, their enemies determined their agenda and were subsequently put in harm’s way as a result.
  3. Do NOT Get Our From Under Your Parents’ Authority – While it often feels confining, inconvenient, or even ridiculous, God gives parents the ability to protect you.  This concept is called the Umbrellas of Protection.  If the girls would have minded their parents, they would have been safe.
  4. Get A Good Guide – On of the girls names Alexa led them into the caves.  A guide will either make your physical or metaphorical journey better, or they will make it worse.  It all depends on the guide you choose.
  5. Do NOT Go Outside The Boundaries – While in the cave, one of girls named Nicole swam outside a burial chamber where they all chose to stay.  This led to the encounter with the sharks.
  6. Adapt Or Die – The sharks adapted to their surroundings after tens of thousands of years.  They had no insight but their sense of sound was profound.
  7. Prepare Or Repair – When the girls tried to leave the caves they regretted not laying down a guide wire.  Doing so would have taken them to immediate safety.  Are there guide wires you need to be laying down in your leadership?
  8. Stay Calm In The Midst Of Trouble – When danger strikes you should not act calm.  You should be calm.
  9. Tragedy Can Strike Quietly, Unexpectedly, And Suddenly – There is an incredible scene when a shark stealthily swims up behind a welder.  This provides an incredible metaphor.  Often leaders are ambushed by trouble they never saw coming.
  10. Stay Out Of Bloody Water – There contain sharks wanting to eat you.

Once again, 47 Meters Down: Unchained is a great movie!!!  If suspense and humans being chased by sharks is your thing, you will love this movie!
