11 Signs Of Church Staff Who Are Not Helping Their Pastor

John Maxwell famously gave us The Law Of The Inner Circle.  This states that those closest to the leader determine the success of the leader.  For pastors, your staff will either make you a better leader or a lesser leader.

The following are 11 Signs Of A Church Staff Who Are Not Helping Their Pastor:

  1. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Poorly Use Their Pastor’s Time And Influence – A pastor friend used to tell me he had four opportunities a year to most leverage his influence.  Only four.  There was not a limitless amount of influence in his tank.  He only had so much change in his pocket and needed to be very strategic in how and when to spend it.  Smart staff do not leverage their pastor in non-productive environments.
  2. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Do Their Jobs With Excellence – When staff do not perform their duties with excellence, it is actually a reflection of the pastor and the culture they have built.  Doing your job with excellence also allows the pastor to avoid embarrassment and from having to answer unnecessary questions.
  3. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Make The Pastor’s Ideas Better – A great staff takes a good idea from the pastor and makes it a great idea.
  4. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Are Always Looking At Their Phones During Meetings – It shows disrespect to the pastor and an indication his or her communications are not important.
  5. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Are Lazy – Are they late for meetings?  Are they unkept?  Do they turn in assignments past the original due date?  Are they unreliable?  Do they care?  Once again, this ultimately becomes a reflection of the pastor because lay leaders wonder why this is allowed.
  6. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Echo The Pastor’s Message – The definition of leadership is “influence.”  That’s the definition but what is the role of leadership?  The role of leadership is the multiplication of the church’s mission and vision based upon your sphere of influence.  The role of an individual staff member is to echo the pastor’s voice.  If I’m talking to a staff member about something related to the church, I should be, in essence, speaking with the pastor.
  7. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Support The Other Staff – Nothing is more sickening than when church staff make fun of other church staff.  When you are on a church staff, other staff members are not the enemy.  The enemy is the enemy.  One of the best things you can do to help your pastor is to make other staff members more successful.
  8. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Have Low Energy – The most valuable asset you bring each day to your God-given assignment is energy.  High-energy staff often help their pastor and accomplish great things for the Kingdom.  Low-energy staff often do not.
  9. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Invite Their Unchurched Friends – Nothing honors a pastor more than bringing visitors to church. The best staff members have broken hearts over those far from God.
  10. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Do Not Share Their Faith – Not only are their hearts broken over the lost, they take the next step to share their faith with those who desperately need a saving-relationship with Christ.
  11. A Church Staff Does Not Help Their Pastor When They Are Not Trustworthy – Having high-character will not necessarily make you a great staff member.  However, low-character automatically disqualifies you from being a staff member who can help the pastor.

If you are a church staff member, is there anything on this list which you can improve on to make you better at your job?
