Urban Meyer’s Criteria For The Type Of Players And Coaches He Wants On His Team

Two days ago I released the complimentary resource Free Ebook On The Leadership Brilliance Of Coach Urban Meyer.  This has since been downloaded at historic levels.  Every leader and coach should have this as one of their go-to resources.  Its content originates from Coach Meyer’s best insights and leadership quotes from Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff preview shows during the 2019 season.

You can get your copy by clicking HERE or on the image provided.

Speaking of Coach Meyer, the three-time national champion also co-hosted the Focus 3 Podcast with elite performance coach and consultant Tim Kight.  Because of their chemistry and the depth, relevance, and applicability of their conversations, this is my favorite leadership podcast.

During its April 6, 2020 edition, they discussed creating an elite culture and the type of players and coaches Coach Meyer wants on his team.  The entire podcast episode should be listened to by every leader but the following are 25 quotes I captured from a portion of their time together.

If you want to hire or recruit elite individuals, implement these concepts and systems into you talent acquisition process.

Introductory Comments

  1. “The two priorities of elite leadership are clarify and implement a culture and acquire and develop talent.” – TK
  2. “The elite organizations has set criteria.” – UM
  3. “We made very few mistakes because the players (we recruited) fit our criteria.” – UM
  4. “If you can’t say your criteria, you don’t have one.” – UM
  5. “Elite organizations hire for three reasons.  Job skills (technical) is number one.  Behavior skills (attitude) is number two and cultural fit (alignment) is number three.” – TK
  6. “Elite organizations are exclusive first and inclusive second.” – TK
  7. “What makes everything great?  Winning.  You’re in the win business.  How do you spell ‘fun’ – W.I.N.” – UM

The following are Urban Meyer’s Criteria For The Type Of Players And Coaches He Wants On His Team:

  1. Competitive Spirit – Elite competitor.
  2. “When talent is unequaled, why watch that?  It’s a highlight video.  I would always want to watch 4th downs.  I would want to watch overtimes, two-minutes drills, state championships, state playoffs.  When talent is equated I want to watch that.”
  3. “Coach, why are you not using this player in this most critical time?”
  4. “I did not watch hours of film on players.  I watched minutes but the minutes were of critical times… The other moments don’t matter.”
  5. Toughness – Knowing the difference between pain and injury.
  6. “You are going to get hurt.  You are going to suffer.  That’s called pain.”
  7. “The toughest guys perform in the toughest situations.”
  8. “If a player plays his best in tough situations, that’s about toughness.”
  9. Leadership – Is he a captain in high school?
  10. “I learned more about Tim Tebow playing right field in baseball his junior year than I did watching him play football.”
  11. Intelligence – Grades, academics
  12. “Is he a ‘missed assignment guy’ constantly?”
  13. “Is he constantly making mistakes when you watch the video tape?”
  14. Adaptability
  15. “The best athletes, the best players, the best coaches, the best people I want in my organization… there’s very few for sures in life.  Things will break down.”
  16. “College football breaks down every play.”
  17. “What makes Ryan Day so special?  He’s an excellent play caller.  He adapts.  He moves on his feet.  He thinks on his feet.  He can adapt.”
  18. “Let me see what happens when an offensive lineman misses a block.  Can the quarterback get out of that?”

Coach Meyer added that before they took an athlete, the player had to check the box in all five.  If you have a strong enough core of these type of individuals on your team, it then allows you the opportunity to perhaps take a peripheral guy.

In closing, let me ask you a question – do you have a defined criteria for the type of people you want to add to your organization?  If not, you should begin developing that criteria immediately and start with competitive spirit, toughness, leadership, intelligence, and adaptability.
