Urban Meyer’s 4 Ways Trevor Lawrence Earned Respect (And How Other Quarterbacks And Leaders Can Also)

What does a very successful older leader, one who has achieved the ultimate of success in his or her area of discipline, look for in a younger leader?  After all, they are not impressed easily.  This post will give you four things that earn the respect of even the best seasoned leaders.

Coach Urban Meyer is one of my favorite leadership speakers.  As you can see from the video above, he has a unique way of  communicating complex thoughts in clear, concise language.  As a result, I make the Fox Sports Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show appointment television.  Coach Meyer makes each episode a leadership clinic.  In fact, I captured all his best comments from the 2019 season in a free ebook you can receive by clicking HERE.

In today’s show, he profiled Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence and what he has done to earn so much respect from his coaches and teammates.  The principles taught by Coach Meyer are applicable to anyone in leadership.

The following are several introductory comments along with a leadership lessons I gleaned from Coach Meyer before getting to the 4 ways a quarterback or leader earns respect:

  • Smart Leaders Prioritize The Right Things – “The people on the field are the only thing that matters.”
  • Respect Is Earned, Not Given – “The number one responsibility of the quarterback is to earn the respect of the players… The most unique position in of all sports.  Those offensive players actually play for the quarterback so you have to earn respect.”  Make sure you also read 20 Quotes On The Faith And Leadership Of Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence for why Lawrence has so much respect.
  • Recruiting Is The Key To Your Organization’s Future Success – “There’s two ways to evaluate how you’re recruiting.  Rings won and the NFL Draft in the spring…  In the last 10 years of top three rounds, the SEC has 145 defensive players drafted.  The Big 12 (has) 33.  That’s inexcusable.  You’re talking about as good as high school football as there is in Texas.”
  • Smart Leaders Know The Key To Their Organization’s Success – “20 years from now you’re still going to have to play good defense to win a championship.”

The following are Urban Meyer’s 4 Ways Trevor Lawrence Earned Respect (And How Other Quarterbacks And Leaders Can As Well).  All quotes are from Coach Meyer.

  1. Competitiveness – “You have to be the most competitive player on the team.”
  2. Toughness – Coach Meyer told the story Ohio State’s Shawn Wade’s hit on Trevor Lawrence in last year’s playoff game.  As you can see in the video above, the hit briefly knocked Lawrence out of the game.  However, he returned to action and in just four plays, led the Tigers to a touchdown.  That’s toughness.
  3. Leadership – “Can you raise the level of play around you?”
  4. Adaptability – “Very rarely is there is perfect play.  How do you adapt when a play breaks down?  Can you extend a play?  When a play breaks down, can you make something out of nothing?”

What one of these four areas can you improve on to become a better leader?
