There is no absence of free advice in this world. It seems everyone is an expert. But is all advice of equal value?
This past weekend I had the privilege of attending an engagement party for a young couple at our church. As the evening drew to a close, the older couples in attendance were asked to give them some “sage” advice. The following is what I passed on:
- Marriage is not based on trust. Marriage is not based on love. Marriage is not based on a feeling. Marriage is not based on common interests. Marriage is based upon a PERSON and that person is Jesus Christ. Marriage is a picture of His love and relationship with the church.
- Out-serve your spouse. If both people in a marriage are attempting to out-serve the other, you are probably going to be just fine. After 29 years, I’m still tying to out-serve my wife Sonya.
- This final one was directed specifically to the husband. Always apologize, especially if you did nothing wrong. This is counterintuitive but think about it, when are you the most like Jesus in a marriage? Jesus took all the blame, all the abuse, all the punishment, all the embarrassment, and all the rejection. Yet, He did nothing wrong. But He did so to reconcile with His bride, the church. Therefore, husbands should always apologize first and take all the blame, all the punishment, all the embarrassment, and all the rejection to reconcile with their bride, especially when they did nothing wrong.
That’s my advice. What advice would you give to an engage couple about to be married?
