No matter how talented you are as a leader, there are certain cultures and environments where you will simply never be successful. Sadly, there will instances in which you as a leader will have challenges you simply cannot overcome.
For leadership junkies, this is a great time of year. With the NFL Draft taking place in late April, quarterbacks are under intense scrutiny. But history has shown us that unless a quarterback is drafted by the right team, with the right coach, in the right culture, with the right talent around them, they will never be successful.
One of my most trusted voices in the area of leadership development is ESPN’s Louis Riddick. Today he was at Ohio State’s Pro Day where he watched projected Top 5-pick Justin Fields up close.
I found his subsequent tweets very insightful as they provided a great template of what is required for leadership success.
First, let’s read his tweets. Afterwards, I will list 6 Things A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without I gleaned from his comments:
Teams that were having the most success offensively in terms of QB play that we talked to last year for #MNF all had this in common – a GREAT relationship/total respect between QB & play caller. The QB trusted what was being called, and the play caller trusted QB to execute.

Obviously the skill level and intrinsic motivation of the player is very important and plays a major role, I’m just sayin…

Now the lessons:
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without GREAT Relationships With Senior Leadership – “A GREAT relationship”
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without Respecting And Be Respected By Senior Leadership – “and total respect between the quarterback and the play caller.”
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without Trusting Senior Leadership And Their Decision-Making Process – “The quarterback trusted what was called.”
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without Executing The Decisions Of Senior Leadership – “The play caller trusted the quarterback to execute.”
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without Being Highly-Skilled At Their Chosen Craft – “Obviously the skill level”
- A Leader Will NEVER Be Successful Without Being Intrinsically Self-Motivated – “and intrinsic motivation is very important and plays a major role.”
Relationships. Respect. Trust. Decision-Making. Skill. Intrinsically Self-Motivation. Without these six things, a leader will never be successful.
