Each Monday morning I have the privilege of being part of a Zoom Bible study for baseball scouts and coaches. It is arguable my favorite 45 minutes of the week. Shown above is a picture from a recent gathering.
If you are a baseball scout or coach at the high school, college, or professional level and want to join about 60 like-minded people each week to be discipled in the area of spiritual leadership, email NorthStar Church’s senior pastor Mike Linch at mike.linch@northstarchurch.org. He will get you all the information for you to be a part of this incredible group of men. Shown above is a picture from a recent gathering. Mike is the one in the top left.
Today’s lesson centered on what it meant to be a wholehearted follower of Jesus Christ.
Former manager of the Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates Clint Hurdle was asked if he ever managed any players who were all about themselves. Coach Hurdle enthusiastically responded with the following incredible insights.
The following are 6 Things All Leaders Must Know About Dealing With Selfish Team Members we learn from Coach Clint Hurdle: all quotes are his.
- Selfish Team Members Are All-In Until It Costs Them Personally – “One of the common threads is (players who say), ‘I’m all-in personally unless it affects them personally.”
- Selfish Team Members Must Be Separated From The Rest Of The Team – “You must separate the I’s.” Coach Hurdle was referring to players who say, “I want to pitch on opening day. I want to pitch when we open a series. I want to pitch during the day.” Once again, you must separate the I’s from the other players. How do you do it? Read the next point.
- Selfish Team Members Must Then Be Privately Confronted – “I would then call them into my office individually. Never call them out in public.”
- Every Team Member Must Be Evaluated In The Area Of Selfishness – “At the end of season, line up the players and look at each of them. (Ask) Was he in?”
- Great Teams Rid Themselves Of Selfish Team Members – “When you have a large group of men who are in, you’ll have the best year ever.”
- Your Teammates Are Watching To See If You Are Selfish Or All-In – “Your teammates are watching you.”
Coach Hurdle is a man of great wisdom. As a major league manager, he won 1269 games. He is an expert on the subject of leadership.
But what I appreciate most about him is how much he loves Jesus and the value he consistently brings to the Bible study. Once again, if you would like to be part of this incredible community of Christ-followers, email Mike Linch at mike.linch@northstarchurch.org.
