Good morning Impact Church. My name is Thomas and I am the campus pastor at our downtown location. As we prepare to continue our worship with a time of giving, I want to share a story with you.
Several years ago, nine students from Howard University were accepted to be part of a summer acting program at the British Academy of Dramatic Acting in Oxford. However, like many college students, they needed financial assistance. One day, one of the students received a letter notifying him that his tuition had been paid by a generous benefactor.
That student was none other than Chadwick Boseman who would go on to become the Black Panther. The benefactor who gave in secret was none other than Denzel Washington. On June 21, 2019, Boseman told this story as Washington was receiving the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.
Let’s take a look at this video:
Matthew 6:4 says, “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”
As we receive this morning’s offering, no one will know what you are giving except you and our business office. But there is a third person who will know – God Himself.
And here’s what we know from watching that video and reading from the Book of Matthew, God will reward you openly for the generosity you have shown privately, just like He did in the life of Denzel Washington.
You never know what God will do your gifts today. As the Black Panther said, “There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”
And there will be no life change through our ministry without you and your kindness. Thank you! Let you who waters be watered. Let you who has given be given to.
