Today I will be bringing you the top leadership quotes and lessons from the Defy The Odds Conference. Hosted and led by Rock Springs Church senior pastor Benny Tate, this event is to encourage church leaders in their current season by providing practical tools and resources for the next-level of growth. I also recommend you purchase Pastor Benny’s wonderful book Defy the Odds: How God Can Use Your Past to Shape Your Future by clicking HERE.
The event’s closing session was conducted by, of course, Pastor Benny Tate. Pastor Benny gave his life to Jesus Christ at 16 years old. Every good thing in his life has been birthed out of that decision. He took the job of senior pastor of Rock Springs Church in 1990 when the church was running 25 in attendance. Today it runs over 5,000 in weekly. Pastor Benny is truly an elite leader. To God be the glory.

Now on to Pastor Benny’s comments:
-
- “When you don’t promote what you’re doing at your church, it’s like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you’re doing but she doesn’t.”
- “The greatest leader ever was Jesus Christ.”
- “The secret word to leadership is SERVE. If serving is beneath you, leading will always be above you. A true leader wants more for the people than he wants from the people.”
- “If you want to be a great leader, simply start serving people.”
- “The greatness of a person is not the number of people serving you, but the number of people you have served.”
- “S – See the future. You can’t delegate as a leader the casting of the vision. Nobody is excited about a vision where you’re standing and they’re kneeling. A vision from God always includes others and will always be connected to the Great Commission.”
- “E – Engage and develop others. For ever set of hands you hire, you get a free brain. Don’t try to fix people, try to fit them.”
- “R – Reinvent continuously. Leaders are learners. When you’re through changing, you’re through. Reinvent your methods. Methods are many, principles are few.”
- “As your church grows, your structure must change. Systems have to change. Our services are going to change.”
- “Why did you cancel Sunday night services? I got tired to going to church by myself.”
- “I’ve had to reinvent myself.”
- “All people respond to praises and raises.
- “E – Encourage people with your pen.”
- “Martin Luther said, ‘If you want to change the world, pick up a pen.’”
- “Encourage people with your purse. If you pay them the best you can, they won’t look at other places. If you pay good you get eagles. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.”
- “Encourage people with your prayers.”
- “Embody the values. A lack of trust will slow your organization down more than anything else.”
- “The only way to build trust is to embody the values you are teaching.”
- “Every leader must lead inwardly. You must first lead yourself. The truths we need the most we like the least. We ignore inward leadership because others can’t see it.”
- “Every leader must lead laterally. You’re on the same level. You lead them by simply being consistent. Are you willing to listen and serve?”
- “Every leader must lead upwardly. You’re in a dangerous place when no one can tell you ‘No’. The word is humility. The attitude of humility gives you access to create action.”
- “Every leader must lead downwardly.”
John Maxwell’s 5 Levels Of Leadership
- Level 1 – Position – They’re into their rights, their title. They’re talking about organizational charts. Jesus Christ was not into titles, He was into towels.
- Level 2 – Relationships – When you get people to work with you when they’re really not obligated.
- Level 3- Results – People follow you because of what you’ve done for the organization.
- Level 4 – Return – People developed. People follow you for what you’ve done for them. Your job is to discover people and develop people. You discover, develop, and then deploy.
- Level 5 – Personhood – Respect. People follow you because of who you are.
What an amazing conference this has been!!! I can’t wait until next year’s event.
The Top 75 Leadership Quotes From 2021 Part 2 is my latest ebook. For many entering a post-pandemic environment, leadership looks completely different than the pre-pandemic world. People are more broken now. They are more uncertain. Fear and anxiousness are unwelcome constant companions. Cultures are more unhealthy. Relationships are more dysfunctional. Hope seems to be in short supply. Every day seems to bring a new hacking, natural disaster, or unexpected calamity.
Therefore, the fundamentals of leadership are more important than ever. The quotes in this book deal with the basics of leadership. If you want to be the best leader you can possibly be, click HERE or on the image provided to download this FREE resource. The lessons learned from last year, if applied, will sustain you for years to come.
