An Extraordinary Ministry Coach
Kevin Lloyd (pictured here) is an extraordinary ministry coach for CourageousPastors.com. In addition, he serves as executive pastor for Lifepoint Church in Wilmington, NC where he oversees a multi-campus team running several thousand each Sunday.
Recently, I had the privilege of being in a breakout session where he taught pastors and church leaders the value of “big days and growth engines.”
A Growing Leader
The most important thing a growing church must have is a growing leader. Kevin confirmed this with his opening comment, “Overflow begins with what God is doing inside of us.” He also added, “We’re guilty of incremental thinking. rather than exponential thinking.”
10 Simple Ways Churches Can Prepare For Exponential Onsite Growth
It was then Kevin unpacked 10 Simple Ways Churches Can Prepare For Exponential Onsite Growth. I felt his thoughts were so insightful I want to share them with you.
To have exponential growth and big attendance day, you need:
- Focused Urgency – You need to give people something outside of Christmas and Easter. Pick a big day and invite your friends on that day. Work everything in the church towards that day. Put it on the calendar 12-16 weeks out.
- Focused Leadership – This is necessary for synergy. Work backward from that Big Day. As a leader, you have to stay focused.
- Focused Ministries – Do a calendar audit of your church. You have to cancel things and pause things.
- Focused Messaging to your Community. – It needs to make sense on the community calendar. Make sure you speak to the pain points in your community.
- Focused Engagement In Serving – Make your serving strategic.
- Focused Teaching – Begin with an evangelistic sermon series, then a discipleship coaching series., then a evangelism training series,
- Focused Invites – Have one invite card sitting on each chair for several weeks leading up to the Big Day.
- Focused Prayer – Prayer is the foundation of any successful ministry initiative, especially large evangelistic efforts.
- Focused Excellence – The majority of our leaders are creative thinkers who demand excellence.
- Focused Connections – A crowd doesn’t make a church but it can become one. The number one value for your follow-up is relationships. Your guests need feel they are cared for. In your follow-up text, ask if a campus pastor can pray for them and schedule a tour. Also, find out their favorite cup of coffee and have one waiting on them when they arrive.
Big Days cause all 10 of these initiatives to be aligned and focused like a laser into a single weekend.
The Value Of Pressure
Kevin concluded by saying, “You need to elevate urgency (of the Big Day). And when you do that, some people will say it’s too much. It separates good leaders from great leaders. Pressure crushes rocks and creates diamonds.”

The Top 75 Leadership Quotes From 2021 Part 2 is my latest ebook. For many entering a post-pandemic environment, leadership looks completely different than the pre-pandemic world. People are more broken now. They are more uncertain. Fear and anxiousness are unwelcome constant companions. Cultures are more unhealthy. Relationships are more dysfunctional. Hope seems to be in short supply. Every day seems to bring a new hacking, natural disaster, or unexpected calamity.
Therefore, the fundamentals of leadership are more important than ever. The quotes in this book deal with the basics of leadership.
