On May 31st, a very interesting ruling came down from The State of California Third Appellate District. In the case of Almond Alliance Of California vs. Fish And Game Commission, the court ruled that bees could be officially classified as fish. Here’s the backstory.
In 2018, four different species of California bees were in danger of becoming extinct. Several groups began petitioning for their protection. The court then recently ruled these bees as an endangered species. Their thought was Section 45 of the California Fish and Game Code defined fish as “a wild fish, mollusk, crustacean, invertebrate, amphibian, or part, spawn, or ovum of any of those animals.” As you can see, most of what is listed the normal person would not classify as fish. Therefore, a loophole existed to lump endangered bees into this group as well.
Bottom line – the California Court of Appeals now says bees are fish.
What does this have to do with leadership? Ironically, it has everything to do with relationship.
Leaders cannot take their organizations and teams from Point A to Point B without first knowing where Point A actually is. As a result, the first and primary responsibility of leadership is to properly define reality. You cannot effectively move forward otherwise.
Leaders have a responsibility to properly assess of the following areas of their responsibilities:
- Current Culture
- Strengths
- Weaknesses
- Marketplace Opportunities
- Threats
- Financial Position
- Employee Performance
- Spiritual Condition
- Future
- Leadership Pipeline
- Physical Health
- State of Your Personal and Professional Relationships
The California Court of Appeals appear to have a problem telling the difference between a bee and a fish. They apparently have a problem defining reality. May we not have the same issue. What we are called to do as leaders is too important.
