We are very aware of the things which often disqualify someone from leadership. This list includes sexual misconduct, financial impropriety, and abusive behavior. However, there is another list of items which can disqualify you from leadership which are rarely talked about.
Kevin Burrell is one of my favorite leaders. He is an area scout for the Chicago White Sox and one of the finest men you will ever meet. Kevin’s twitter feed is a must-read and his commitment to Christian discipleship is inspiring. But don’t let his kind demeanor fool you when it comes to evaluating talent. Kevin is a man of extremely high standards.
Below is a tweet he posted earlier this week. As you will see, the player he was evaluating was a “top name for 2023.” Yet, Kevin classified him as “a work in progress” and will continue to monitor his progress over the next year.
One of my player prospect game cards. Scouts and coaches evaluate ‘every’ aspect of a prospects game—not simply the 5-tools. Your attitude will determine your altitude > the pain of discipline is always [less] than the pain of regret. Effort and attitude ➡️ you control. pic.twitter.com/5K8TiD17GJ

After reading Kevin’s evaluation, we discover 10 things which can disqualify you as a major league prospect. Worse yet, they can also disqualify you from leadership. The list is the following:
- Lack of passion. You don’t love or live the game or your organization’s mission or vision.
- Lack of effort. This player did not run balls out. You have poor body language. Effort is something you control.
- Not coachable. You have an ego problem and are not open to instruction.
- Poor teammate. You are high-maintenance and bring other people down.
- Struggle to make in-game adjustments. You are rigid.
- Immaturity. You are not mentally or emotionally ready for leadership.
- Selfish. You want all of the attention.
- Unbalanced. You lack the fundamentals to lead.
- Poor attitude. Attitude is a choice. It also determines your altitude. You have a low leadership ceiling.
- Undisciplined. As Kevin said, the pain of discipline is always less than the pain of regret.
It is not talked about often, but having any of these ten issues will disqualify you from leadership. If anything on this list describes you, the time to make changes is now.
