Smells Like Home
Have you ever heard someone say when they walked through the door and smelled the bread or what was cooking in the kitchen, they knew they were home? I have and you probably have as well. Psychologists and brain experts claim the sense of smell is closely linked with memory. In fact, it is more so than any of the other senses.
My favorite smell is pot roast after it has been in a crock pot for a couple of hours. Oh my heavens, they should make a perfume called “Pot Roast!”
For leaders who are feeling heat and pressure or experiencing disappointment or constraints, you can learn a lot about what happens to meat when it is placed in a crock pot for an extended period of time.
Being placed in a crock pot forces the roast into a confined environment where heat will be applied. But this heat brings out the meat’s natural juices. The juices then marinate the roast causing the meat to tenderize and produce flavors and smells that draw you in.
Afterwards, you get to sit down to a great feast and enjoy the meal with others. Crock potting is worth the wait.
This should comfort countless leaders reading this post.
Heat, Pressure, Disappointment, And Constraints
You may be in a job, department, or ministry you do not enjoy. You feel stuck and unable to demonstrate your strengths. The advancement opportunities are limited at best. You seem like you are just spinning your wheels while wasting your time in a dead end job.
Or you may be feeling intense heat. Your boss is putting pressure on you but no matter you do, you cannot please him/her. The disrespect is palpable. Furthermore, despite your best efforts, results are not coming. And each day the pressure mounts more and more. You wonder if today is the day you will lose your job.
But take comfort.
Conclusion
This heat and pressure are pulling things (juices) out of you that you do not even realize. You are becoming more tender (compassionate) and inviting as a leader. And there will eventually come a day when a great number of people will sit down at a proverbial banquet of your leadership.
John Piper once said, “God is doing 100 things in your life. You might be aware of three of them.” So if you are feeling heat or pressure and experiencing disappointment and constraints, choose joy. You might just be in God’s leadership crockpot.
Never forget, food tastes better coming out of a crockpot than a microwave. Crockpotted leaders are better than microwaved ones as well.
