Recently, I watched something happen which caused me to have a certain level of anger. The source of my anger was I have seen this played out time-and-time again. It just gets frustrating after awhile.
Several people were working very hard on a project which would benefit hundreds of individuals. Once all the hard work had been completed, a department leader showed up and just moments before the CEO. Guess who received all the credit? The department leader who did none of the heavy lifting.
Even worse, not only did the department leader not credit the team with project’s success, this person received the public praise from the CEO and took part in a photo-op with various community leaders. Guess who was not in the photo? The team who did all the work.
This is not an uncommon occurrence. It happens in countless organizations every single day. Few things are as disheartening and cause disillusionment as much as photo-op leaders. We don’t need photo-op leaders, we need passionate leaders. Passionate leaders own the result, regardless of the cost.
How do you know the difference? The following are 7 Differences Between Passionate People vs. Photo-Op People:
- Passionate People are givers. Photo-Op People are takers.
- Passionate People are about others. Photo-Op People are about themselves.
- Passionate People arrive early and stay late. Photo-Op People arrive late and leave early.
- Passionate People are about results. Photo-Op People continually tell you about their resume.
- Passionate People are about hard work. Photo-Op People are about doing the least amount of work.
- Passionate People are about transformation. They are about changing lives. Photo-Op People are transaction. They are about what they can get out of the exchange.
- Passionate People are about the big picture. Photo-Op People are about having their picture taken.
Leaders, next time a photo-op takes place, take a moment and figure out who did all the work and should be in the picture. This will allow you to give credit where credit is due and create a culture people want to be a part of.
